Supervise and work along with a composite crew of highly skilled and semi-skilled employees providing technical direction in the construction of and maintenance of the State-owned buildings and properties. Perform all aspects of grounds maintenance while in a supervisory role. Interpret construction drawings, blueprints, and job specifications to determine labor and material requirements. Order materials, supplies and assign appropriate staff. Meet with supervisors of the other shops involved in the project to coordinate activities and schedule work to be performed to ensure the effective utilization of staff, materials, equipment and completion of the project on schedule. Supervise a grounds crew for all daily grounds operations including but not limited to; mowing, raking, tree trimming, plowing, and minor road repairs. Prioritizes and schedules routine to emergency grounds maintenance. Utilize the AiM work management system to track project progress, supplies, work hours and costs. Provides training to staff by demonstrating proper use of equipment and materials to perform specific grounds maintenance tasks to meet quality standards. Periodically spot checks work to make sure instructions are followed and work is progressing according to schedule. Prepare written performance evaluations and probation reports of subordinate staff, perform written and verbal counseling when needed, and ensure all staff training requirements are met. Participates in the interviewing process for staff selection, establishes training standards, and trains new staff. Perform a full range of supervisory duties. Perform other duties as assigned.
Operational Needs : Possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted New York State motor vehicle operator's license. Able to operate a variety of forklifts. Must be able to perform medium to heavy manual labor in all weather conditions. Experience and working knowledge of AiM. Mandatory overtime as required for snow / ice control and removal, special events, and emergencies, including weekdays, weekends, and holidays. Ability to lift a minimum of 80 lbs.
Minimum Qualifications : One year of trade experience subsequent to the completion of an apprenticeship or equivalent training and experience such as that required for a Trades Specialist (Carpenter), Trades Specialist (Electrician), Service & Repair Mechanic (Electronics), Trades Generalist, Grounds Construction Supervisor, Trades Specialist (Locksmith), Trades Specialist (Machinist), Trades Specialist (Mason & Plasterer), Service & Repair Mechanic (Motor Equipment), Trades Specialist (Painter), Trades Specialist (Plumber & Steamfitter), Service & Repair Mechanic (HVAC-R), Trades Specialist (Roofing), or Trades Specialist (Welder). Preferred Qualification : Possess a valid CDL license. Note : In order to award the proper credit for work experience, resumes must include month and year for start and end dates. If any of this experience is less than full time, you must indicate the average number of hours worked per week.
