School Crossing Guard

The City of Largo is looking for a friendly and dependable part-time School Crossing Guard to help keep our youngest residents safe as they travel to and from school. This important role is active during key times of the daywhen school is opening or closingand plays a vital part in our community's daily rhythm. If you enjoy being outdoors (yes, even in that famous Florida sunshine!), staying alert, and making a difference, this could be the perfect fit. The ideal candidate is reliable, observant, and communicates well with children, parents, and school staff. This position reports to an assigned supervisor, and we'll provide all the necessary training and uniform to get you started.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities :

Leadership

Management

  • Effectively manages assignments and priorities to ensure the fulfillment of projects, tasks, and responsibilities
  • Follows suggested procedures to assure the highest standards of risk management, employee safety and risk avoidance
  • Technical

  • Places traffic cones on the roadway at designated points near crossing and removes them before going off duty
  • Controls vehicular traffic at designated crossings to allow children to cross safely
  • Reports children who fail to cooperate to an immediate superior
  • May function as an Alternate School Crossing Guard
  • Team Skills

  • Supports honest and transparent decision-making
  • Collaborates with all team members in a way that builds upon ideas and takes personal accountability and ownership of projects, roles, and assignments
  • Openly exhibits a positive attitude, in words and action, and encourages others to do the same
  • Performs related work as required.

    Emergency Response Status As a condition of employment, City of Largo employees will be required to work as directed during an undeclared and / or a declared emergency. All employees are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the normal work location, and may include duties other than those specified in the official job description.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education and Experience :

  • High School diploma or general education diploma (GED) required
  • Must have physical ability to perform the functions of the job
  • Selected candidates will receive Crossing Guard Training and must pass the training and practical courses to receive a Crossing Guard Certificate within a designated time frame
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

  • Some knowledge of traffic regulations
  • Ability and willingness to work outside in inclement weather
  • Willingness to work with children, parents, and community in a courteous and tactful manner
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Work Environment & Physical Requirements

    Work Environment : 100% outside which may include driving. Must be willing to work outside in adverse weather conditions.

    Physical Requirements : The essential functions of the job require : standing approximately four (4) hours per day, and walking approximately four (4) hours per day. The work requires frequent : bending / stooping, climbing, crawling, fine manipulations, grasping, kneeling, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, lifting / carrying of objects weighing up to 15 pounds.

    Sensory Requirements : Hearing : Enough to hear emergency vehicles, cars, and children's conversations. Speaking : Enough to communicate instructions to students in elementary, middle and high school. Seeing : Enough to see oncoming traffic, the color of the traffic light, and pedestrian signals. Depth perception is important.
