About the Role :

Field Medical is seeking an experienced Senior Patent Agent to consult for our team on a part-time contract. This role is critical to building and protecting our intellectual property portfolio in the rapidly evolving field of cardiac therapeutics. You'll work closely with our engineering and clinical team, senior leadership, and outside patent counsel to develop comprehensive IP protection strategies and prepare high-quality patent applications that safeguard our breakthrough innovations.

Your Responsibilities Will Include :

  • Partner with cross-functional teams to identify patentable inventions, conduct regular invention disclosure sessions, and implement strategic IP protection plans
  • Work directly with engineers, researchers, and technical leadership to extract detailed technical information and translate innovations into strong patent applications
  • Prepare and draft patent applications; manage prosecution strategy with outside patent counsel
  • Coordinate with outside patent counsel to ensure timely, high-quality patent filings and responses to office actions
  • Analyze third-party patent positions, and assess potential IP risks and opportunities
  • Perform comprehensive patent searches, monitor competitive IP landscape, and provide strategic guidance based on emerging trends
  • Identify and evaluate complex IP risks including patentability, infringement, and validity issues; develop business-oriented mitigation strategies

Required Qualifications :

  • 7+ years of experience in patent preparation and prosecution for medical devices, preferably with a mix of law firm and in-house experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Biomedical, Electrical, Mechanical, or related field)
  • Registered Patent Agent with the USPTO
  • Proven track record developing and implementing patent strategies with demonstrated success securing meaningful patent protection for medical devices
  • Deep understanding of patent law, USPTO procedures, and international IP frameworks
  • Experience with patent portfolio management and global IP strategy in cardiovascular space
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills with ability to explain complex concepts clearly to diverse audiences
  • Proficiency in using scientific and IP databases (e.g., PatSnap, Derwent, USPTO databases)

    • Preferred Qualifications :

  • Experience with cardiac devices, pulsed field ablation (PFA) technology, electrophysiology, cardiac ablation systems, or energy-based medical devices
  • Patent experience at a medical device startup or high-growth MedTech company
  • Familiarity with Class III medical device development and regulatory pathways
  • Local to San Diego preferred, or willingness to travel to San Diego up to 20% for in-person collaboration
