Communications & Operations Manager

The Department of Anthropology is home to a diverse community of scholars and students who produce inventive, multidisciplinary, and impactful research and pedagogy in critical areas of concern in the U.S. and abroad. This work contributes to Princeton's ambitious plan to build capacity for the future.

The Communications & Operations Manager works with the Chair, the Manager, Finance and Administration, faculty, the Director of the VizE LAB, the faculty's lectures committee, and the two Co-Directors of the new Human Rights Initiative to develop communication strategies and oversee the department's everyday operations. Primary duties include communications development and implementation, production of online and printed marketing materials and outreach strategies, and managing departmental calendars. The position also oversees the departmental website and social media platforms, departmental and faculty-led events, and promotion for these events, as well as other assigned duties.

This position is responsible for creating content and managing internal and external communications. This includes writing news articles of initiatives and events, maintaining the department's social media presence, and sending emails to keep faculty, students, staff, and external contacts informed about department events and news. The Communications & Operations manager oversees all aspects of these events from start to finish. This position oversees all event budgets (large and small), and reports to the Manager, Finance and Administration.

Responsibilities include overseeing events, including departmental functions, visits from special guests, workshops, and conferences. They will collaborate with various university departments and off-campus vendors to organize these events. This person will also provide administrative support to faculty and be responsible for essential operational functions in conjunction with the Manager, Finance and Administration. This position requires strong communication and writing skills and the ability to complete complex assignments quickly and independently. The ideal candidate will have superior organizational skills and the ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects and tasks simultaneously. This person must demonstrate a high degree of professionalism, sound judgment, confidentiality, and flexibility in response to changing demands and priorities.

The Manager will be responsible for creating, producing, and disseminating online and printed materials for publicity, development, and administrative purposes. These publications include program brochures, a biannual newsletter, an annual report, and assorted event materials, such as posters and advertisements. Manage the electronic and photo archives. Create all publicity information for the department. This includes publishing and editing the yearly academic report, which is over 200 pages long. Obtain material from faculty and students and compile all event materials for lectures and co-sponsored events. Design the visual layout using graphic design tools. Publish a weekly newsletter listing our events. Write "News" posts for the website. Create communication materials for new classes offered by the department. Create a brand identity that includes promotional items and other giveaways for students and guests.

Manage all department events, including short- and long-term planning, budgeting, logistics, communication, timeline management, and follow-through. These events include the fall and spring receptions, various lecture series, the graduate visiting weekend, class trips, breakfast and lunch meetings, information sessions, job searches, fieldwork talks, defenses, Anthropology Day, the faculty salon, the holiday party, the end-of-year celebration, the majors' meeting, DGS meetings, study breaks, the graduate conference, AAA presentations and parties, job talks, retirement events, poster presentations, workshops, Sophomore Open House, Graduate Visiting Weekend, Princeton Preview, Class Day, and the end-of-year celebration. Manage the payment of honoraria for all department guests.

Oversee the quality and process of coordinating the production and sharing of all information on webpages and social media. Create branding to include swag items. Manage and update undergraduate and graduate alumni lists. Coordinate media design and update communications. Present a coherent and timely public image of the Department of Anthropology at Princeton University. Collaborate closely with the VizE Lab director to assist in creating marketing materials, a database, and poster designs. Design brochures, newsletters, and flyers for the department and the lab. Present data in a timely and accurate manner. Create a program for Class Day and booklets for conferences.

Essential Qualifications : Bachelor's degree and 5+ years of experience in communication and event management; digital design experience; website content design and design management experience in Drupal and Canva; ability to set up and maintain databases with large data sets; administrative experience; sound working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, and knowledge of / ability to learn management of digital images; excellent interpersonal, organizational, presentation and communication skills; ability to handle multiple assignments and respond to changing office priorities; effective time management; ability to work well in a dynamic team environment partnering with faculty, Directors, staff and students (undergraduate and graduate) and interacting with alumni, guests, and visiting faculty.

Preferred Qualifications : Digital design ability; ability to work to deadlines; strong writing and editing skills; experience with multiple social media platforms; experience in higher education; proven skills in working in an academic environment with faculty, students and research data; track record of accuracy and discretion in use of social media and field materials.
