- Assist cardiothoracic surgeons in the operating room, including first assisting in CABG, valve, and thoracic procedures.
- Provide pre- and post-operative patient management, including rounds, progress notes, and discharge planning.
- Perform bedside procedures such as chest tube insertion, line placement, and wound management as needed.
- Previous experience in cardiothoracic surgery is required; must demonstrate strong clinical and technical skills in a fast-paced surgical environment.

Responsibilities
Clinical Care – The Physician Assistant (PA) or the Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides assessment, triage, and therapeutic management of patient / family needs throughout the disease process as an integral part of an interdisciplinary team. Supports documentation, diagnostic tests, and management plans. May perform procedures, prescribe treatments, and serve as first or second assistant on operative cases (within scope).Patient Education & Psychosocial Support – Educate patients / families on care and resources. Provide psychosocial support to patients and their families.Information Management – Ensure appropriate documentation within hospital and regulatory requirements, protecting patient information.Quality Management – Demonstrate high standard of morality, ethics, professionalism, compassion, and commitment to patient care. Ensure compliance with patient‑related health care regulatory requirements.Professional Development – Engage in projects that maintain and advance professional competency, serve as clinical resource for new staff, mentor pre‑PA / NP candidates, and collaborate on research and quality improvement projects.Qualifications
Education – Graduate from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or an accredited Physician Assistant Program.Experience – Clinical working experience as an NP / PA in the specialty / service line is preferred but not required. APRNs, PAs, CRNAs, and CNMs must be appointed to the Affiliated Medical Staff of a YNHHS hospital and undergo the Medical Staff credentialing process.Licensure – Active PA Certification (NCCPA) and Connecticut State Physician Assistant License; ACLS / BLS Certified; DEA License when required. Pediatric positions may require PALS and NRP certifications. Additional licensure or certificates may be required as needed.Additional Information
