Road Maintenance Equipment Operator
Performs road and highway equipment operation and related work. Work involves operation of specialized road maintenance equipment such as large capacity gross vehicle weight (GVW) trucks, loaders, backhoes, power shovels, graders, rollers to perform road and highway maintenance. Work requires ability to follow instructions and operate road maintenance or road construction equipment as a primary assignment. Work is performed under supervision of a crew leader or supervisor.
Essential Job Functions
Checks equipment required for daily jobs to ensure proper operating order.
Performs walkaround check if equipment is being transported by trailer to ensure that it is secured safely.
Checks dump truck to ensure proper operating order.
Operates equipment required for daily jobs.
Assigns work in absence of crew leaders and monitors job to ensure work is being completed in accordance with specifications. Ensures work site signs are appropriately placed and oversees safety for work crews and the public. Initiates decisions on work processes for specific jobs.
Operates equipment such as a backhoe, tractor mower with an extendable hydraulic mower or ditcher attachment, bulldozer, grader, rubber tire or steel wheel roller weighing 10 or more tons, paver, self-propelled stone or chip spreader, self-propelled road widener, conveyor leader, self-propelled sweeper, truck mounted line painting machines, self-propelled pavement breakers, self-propelled post drivers, front loader or hi-lift with a bucket capacity of three cubic yards or more, excavator, grader, paver-finisher, truck mounted asphalt plant and profile planer used for construction or maintenance work.
Performs manual work on assigned projects when not operating equipment. This includes unloading trucks, repairing guiderails or barriers, erecting signs, cleaning culverts, repairing bridges and cutting brush.
Transports crew to jobs.
Performs emergency snow removal and weather related clean up.
Other Duties
Performs related work as required.

Training and / or Education :
High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Experience :
Four years of progressively responsible road construction or highway maintenance experience.
Licenses or Certificates :
Valid Class A restricted commercial driver's license and a current Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with Federal Regulations.
Special Requirements :
Operation of County owned vehicle.
Subject to alcohol and drug testing.
Physical Demands :
Requires strenuous physical effort to perform manual work involving walking over rough, uneven terrain, repeated bending, climbing, crouching stooping, stretching, reaching or lifting objects up to 100 pounds.
Unusual Demands :
Worker is exposed to dirt and soil, and hazards from road traffic and use of equipment.
Subject to call in or to remain on the job for emergencies.

Compensation Steps :
Pay rate : $22.69 - $25.99 per hour; $47,195 - $54,059 annually
Grade 804, full-time position, 40 hours per week
