Purpose :
Stewards Individual Placements (Stewards), a program of Conservation Legacy, provides individuals with AmeriCorps service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants serve with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits to provide institutional capacity, develop community relationships, and support ecosystem health. Stewards in partnership with Oregon Caves National Monument will host a Natural Resource Management Assistant.
The Natural Resource Management Assistant is an AmeriCorps position that is an interdisciplinary natural resource management position that involves inventory, monitoring, and processing of various scientific data using tablets, computers and other technology. This position will provide training and experience in all subjects of natural resources including but not limited to wildlife biology, hydrology, botany, and geology. The participant will assist in data management for cave and wildlife resource monitoring, GIS & GPS inventory and mapping, database management, report writing, and work alongside Youth Conservation Corps (YCC). The participant must be able to be in an office setting and backcountry setting to traverse varied terrain including slopes, uneven trails, cross-country areas, wet areas, caves and snow-covered areas. The schedule will vary from day to day with a focus on completing assigned natural resource tasks.
Description of Duties :
Coordinate and communicate with NPS and Stewards program lead(s).Assist with wildlife monitoring in areas of planned fuels treatment, which may include Northern spotted owl surveys (ESA Threatened), Franklin's bumble bee surveys (ESA Endangered), Pacific marten camera surveys (ESA Threatened), butterfly surveys for sensitive species, and salamander surveys for sensitive species, etc.Assist in Klamath Network (KLMN) monitoring and inventory of cave resources, including collecting data on cave vegetation and biota, pool depth, temperature, and humidity.Assist in environmental data collection, monitoring infiltration rates through drip collectors, paleontology, cave survey, and other scientific projects inside Oregon Caves.Contribute to airflow data collection, measuring windspeed and direction using anemometers.Conduct air quality data collection within the cave and on the surface to monitor CO2 and PPM2.5.Participate in hydrogeology data collection, and monitoring discharge using pressure loggers and stream gauges.Assist with bat netting, measurement, and WNS inspection.Assist in bat acoustic sampling.Assist in processing and analyzing acoustic data for long-term trend analysis.Support pre / post White-Nose Syndrome (WNS) bat population analysis based on activity, netting results, and telemetry tracking.Collaborate on the processing of natural resource data using statistical software and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).Uphold communication and safety standards at all times, practicing "Leave No Trace" principles.Understand and apply Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), updating them as necessary. Attend ORCA-directed briefings for protocols, operations, NPS mission orientations, and safety.Qualifications :
2 years of college-level educationUnited States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alienApplicants must be between ages of 18-30 years old, or up to 35 for veteran, based on Public Land Corps Act of 1993 authorizing this AmeriCorps opportunity.Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award.Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check for Conservation Legacy and the host site.Preferred Qualifications :
This position is ideally suited for a recent college graduate in the sciences with coursework in GIS. Park housing will be in a private or shared room, in a shared dorm or house. Park housing supplies full kitchen appliances, furnished living room, dishes, bathroom / shower, laundry, wifi (limited), food storage, closet, chest of drawers, and twin bed / mattress. Participant will need to bring clothing, personal items, outdoor gear, bedding, and food.Oregon Caves is a mountain forest setting located at 4000' elevation, with a 3-mile-long cave toured by the public. The park housing, offices and visitor center are clustered together just outside the cave entrance creating a central, social atmosphere. The town of Cave Junction is 20 miles away with two grocery stores, dollar store, health clinic and numerous restaurants and activities. Grants Pass and Medford are large cities located one to 1-1 / 2 hours away with all amenities and the closest hospital. Redwood National and State Parks and beautiful beaches are within a 2-hour drive from the park. Weather will likely be mild with a mix of sun and rain. Heavy rain and snow are also possible depending on the time of year.A personal vehicle is strongly recommended but not required for this position.Our Commitment :

Time Requirements :
This position is expected to serve full time each week, but exact service schedules may vary.Lunch breaks will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service.Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.Orientation and Training :
Member will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.This position will provide training and experience in all subjects of natural resources including but not limited to wildlife biology, hydrology, botany, geology, and GIS. Extensive safety training will also be provided including standard operation procedures, safety risk analysis, job hazards analysis and driving safety.Evaluation and Reporting :
As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.
Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
