General Description :

The Tankerman position serves as the person-in-charge of the vessel for cargo transfer operations involving tank barges.

Transfers involve all types of liquids including oils and refined products, chemicals, and liquefied gases. Tankerman are fully responsible for the transfer include vessel mooring, pre-transfer inspection, opening and closing valves to safely move the cargo on or off the barge, completing required paperwork, and communicating with dock facility personnel.

Tankerman work on 24-hour call and without direct supervision.

  • Serves as the Person-In-Charge of the barge, ensuring the safe transfer of products to and from vessels
  • Travel to job locations within the time determined upon being dispatched.
  • Meets with the facility Person-In-Charge (Dock Operator / Dock Worker) in order to discuss and coordinate chemical transfer expectations.
  • Wears all protective clothing and equipment, including respirator and fresh air equipment that may be required to transfer the product in a manner that insures maximum personal safety.
  • Inspects the barge prior to transfer in order to ensure that the vessel is mechanically sound, seaworthy and the transfer can be accomplished in a safe and uninterrupted manner.
  • Connects cargo arm or hose and aligns the barge's valves to send and receive cargo.
  • Communicates with Marine Logistics Coordinator and reports any irregularities, discrepancies, or unsafe conditions with the vessel, barge and / or facility which could adversely affect the cargo transfer operation.
  • For discharge operations, check the engine and pump to ensure they are mechanically sound prior to beginning the transfer
  • Demonstrate the commitment to utilize Stop Work Authority if there is any uncertainty about whether it is safe to proceed.
  • Regularly evaluate and modify cargo flow as needed throughout the transfer.
  • Regularly inspect and adjust barge mooring lines throughout the cargo transfer to allow for changes in equipment draft or condition.
  • Fills or empties the barge with product, as requested by customer or dispatcher
  • Disconnects the cargo arm or hose and completes required paperwork once the transfer is complete
  • Secures the barge's valves and openings and prepares the barge for sail
  • Calls dispatch with job information prior to departing to job site.
  • Other duties as assigned.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and severe outside weather conditions.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Hearing protection and the use of safety eyewear is required in most working situations.

  • MOBILITY : Must be able to access all controls and all parts of machinery for service. Must be able to push / pull 50 pounds for 20 feet.
  • HEARING : Must be able to hear audible safety alarms.
  • VISUAL ACUITY : Must be adequate to perform above listed tasks in a safe manner and take hand signals from ground man or flag man.
  • LIFTING : Must be able to routinely lift up to 70 pounds from floor to waist, 50 pounds from wait level to shoulder height and carry 70 pounds for 20 feet.

Requirements

Required Qualifications :

  • Valid Coast Guard Merchant Mariners Credential (MMC) is required.
  • Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC) is required.
  • 18 years or older is required.
  • Legally able to work in the is required.
  • Valid Driver's License is required.

Preferred Qualifications :

  • One or more year's of Tankerman experience is preferred.
  • High school Diploma or GED is preferred.
