Lead Headend Engineer
Description
The Lead Headend Engineer is responsible for overseeing the technical operations, maintenance, and performance optimization of the Headend systems that deliver video, internet, and telephony services. This role leads a team of engineers and technicians, ensuring reliable operation of headend infrastructure while implementing technology upgrades and maintaining regulatory compliance. The position also collaborates with cross-functional teams to support growth and deliver exceptional service quality.
Duties / Responsibilities :
Manage and maintain all aspects of the headend systems, including satellite downlinks, encoders, modulators, and related transmission equipment.
Lead installation, configuration, and troubleshooting of digital and analog video equipment.
Oversee preventive maintenance programs and ensure all systems operate within optimal parameters.
Coordinate upgrades, migrations, and expansions within the headend environment to support new services and technologies.
Serve as a subject matter expert on video compression standards, RF signal levels, fiber optics, and IP delivery systems.
Ensure compliance with regulations and internal policies related to video delivery infrastructure.
Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and training to junior headend engineers and technicians.
Create and maintain detailed documentation including diagrams, configuration records, and system performance reports.
Collaborate with NOC, Field Operations, and Engineering teams to resolve service-impacting issues.
Manage headend inventory and coordinate procurement of equipment.
Contribute to the development of disaster recovery and redundancy strategies for headend operations.
Serve as an escalation point for headend-related incidents and participate in on-call rotation.
Minimum Qualifications :
Associate's or Bachelors degree in Electronics, Telecommunications, or related field.
5+ years of experience in headend operations or broadcast engineering.
Experience with RF systems, digital video processing, and fiber infrastructure.
Familiarity with EAS, EPG, PSIP, and related video service protocols.
Knowledge of regulatory compliance requirements.
Preferred certifications : SCTE, CCNA, or equivalent.
