Summary :

To perform a variety of skilled journey level welding work involved in the fabrication, installation, replacement and repair of metal and steel. Structures, buildings and facilities.

Essential Duties : (These duties represent a sample and may vary by position.)

  • Perform a full range of welding work including structural fabrication, installation, repair and maintenance tasks involved in repair, remodeling and new welding projects.
  • Fabricate, weld and repair fender wells for tractors, grates for manhole covers, and brackets for wall exhaust fans and burglar screens.
  • Weld and repair various types of equipment including trucks, mowers, and TV carts; fuse bleacher handrails, fence posts and school bus door openers.
  • Weld and repair steam and hot water pipes.
  • Fabricate, install and repair batting cages, bicycle racks and soccer goals.
  • Repair trash carts, pruning shears, chair dolly's lockers and steel truck beds.
  • Maintain and operate a variety of tools including angle grinder, band saw, metal sheer, drill press, hand drill, spot welder and other welding machinery.

The Sheet Metal and Welding Department assists with the maintenance of 18.4 million sq. ft. of roof on the 600 plus CMS buildings as well as the approximately 1100 MCRs.

Fabricate and install roof flashings, gravel stops, facias, conductor-heads, roof curbs vents, traffic control gates, guard rails, security screens.

Repair Cafeteria Equipment such as oven doors (turnbuckle), dish machines, exhaust ducts, tray rails on serving lines, replace filters in kitchen hoods

Repair all of the play and sports equipment for over 150 + schools

Install climbing ropes, cargo nets, outside play equipment, football goals, batting cages, back stops, basketball goals

Assist with relocating of MCRs which consist of installing and removing trailer tongues, axles, and shackles, anchoring MCRs, modify and install handrails for MCR decks and platforms

Deliver and set up portable wheelchair lifts.Also perform annual safety inspection of chair lifts.

Install ventilation kits for art kilns, vent dryers, exhaust fans, fabricate and install duct work for changing out HVAC equipment

Repair damaged warehouse trucks

Assist with set up of special events (ex. Secretary of Education), etc.

Assist with Graduations

Operation of a jet-vac machine to keep all roof drain lines and keep catch basins flowing

Have a B-license to operate lift gate trucks

  • Fabricate and install security screens, install and repair canopies
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
  • Education and Experience :

    Minimum

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. and course work in electronics
  • 3 - 5 years of increasingly responsible welding experience.
  • Desired

  • Specialized welding training. Trade school or Community College Welding-Fabrication Courses.
  • 5 - 10 years of fabrication-welding experience.Experience in all types of welding, Mig, Tig, Stick, and Gas welding, Traffic control gates, handrails, guard rails, and custom fabrication of cafeteria equipment
  • Licensing / Certification Requirements :

  • Possession of a valid driver's license.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a valid CDL class A driver's license.

    Knowledge / Skills / Abilities :

    Knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the trade of welding.

    Knowledge of pertinent regulations and codes applicable to the fabrication, installation, and repair of building facilities.

    Knowledge of properties of various kinds of metals.

    Knowledge of performing in a safe work practices.

    Ability to perform skilled work involving fabrication, welding, repairing and replacing structural facilities.

    Ability to operate and maintain tools, materials, and equipment used in welding work such as Jet Machine Tech, Folk Lift, and Bobcat.

    Ability to work effectively in the absence of supervision.

    Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

    Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

    Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

    Ability to anchor MCR Units, replace door jams

    Ability to install and repair HVAC lines, kitchen equipment, dish machines, oven doors, stainless steel sink, fencing, platforms and decks for MCRs

    Ability to repairs washers, dryers, bleachers, and football goal posts

    Ability to fabricate and install traffic control gates

    Ability to install ventilation for kitchen hoods, Burkay Heaters, exhaust fans, art kilns, dish machines

    Ability to fabricate a variety of parts for various shops on lathe and milling machine

    Physical Requirements :

  • Skills requiring repetitive motor coordination with climbing / balancing; crawling / kneeling; walking; standing; lifting / carrying; grasping / twisting; reaching; pushing / pulling; and sitting most (5 to 8 hours) of a normal work shift
  • Occasionally (less than 2 hrs. / shift) running and rarely coming in contact with hazardous materials
