Engineering Manager

We're looking for an Engineering Manager to help expand commerce at Venmo. We have successful products in market businesses accept payments through our app, and millions use Pay with Venmo for online checkout, and we see huge potential to do more. The opportunity is clear : merchants want better ways to connect with our massive user base, and our users want to discover and support businesses they love. We have a strong foundation, proven scale, and the resources of a major tech company. What we need is someone to help us build the next chapter. This role offers more autonomy than typical engineering management positions. While we have clear business goals and technical standards, you'll have significant input in shaping how commerce evolves at Venmo. We know the destination making commerce more social and human but you'll help chart the course.
Essential Responsibilities :
- Directly manages software development projects (including program management) and execution through individual contributors. May also lead project teams across platforms or groups.
- Implements processes to drive strong operational hygiene for all components and systems within their group.
- Responsible for the delivery of projects, including quality and timeliness, that impact their domain and potentially one other.
- Demonstrates strong tactical ability by managing the roadmap for a scrum team responsible for technical issues of diverse scope where analysis requires an understanding of current business or tends.
- Competent at communicating technical issues with non-technical audiences.
- Analyzes multiple sources of information and identifies & resolves complex technical, operational, and organizational problems relating to software development.
- Collaborates with direct team, managers in org, stakeholders such as Product Owners & PMO.
Expected Qualifications :
Minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience and a Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.What You'll Do :
Lead a team of 8-20 engineers building and scaling commerce features used by millions of people and businesses daily.Partner with product, design, and business teams to turn ideas into shipped features that solve real customer problems.Own technical strategy for your area making architecture decisions that balance current needs with future growth.Develop your engineers through regular one-on-ones, career planning, and creating opportunities for them to grow.Maintain high engineering standards while moving fast code reviews, testing strategies, and operational excellence.Make informed trade-offs between competing priorities and communicate decisions clearly to stakeholders.Build team culture that encourages innovation, ownership, and learning from both successes and failures.What We're Looking For :
2+ years managing engineering teams, ideally in consumer products or fintech.Track record of shipping and scaling products to millions of users.Strong technical background you can review code, debug issues, and guide architectural decisions.Experience with distributed systems and full-stack development (mobile, web, backend).Ability to work effectively with cross-functional partners and communicate technical concepts clearly.Customer focus you start with user problems, not technical solutions.Comfort working in environments where priorities can shift based on market needs.Experience building and developing high-performing teams.Strong project management skills and ability to deliver on commitments.Nice to Have :
Experience with payment systems or financial products.Background in social, marketplace, or platform businesses.Experience at both startups and established companies.Understanding of small business needs and merchant tools.Track record of building products from concept to launch.Experience managing distributed or remote teams.
