Description
This grant-funded project addresses issues related to connectivity, literacy, and the preparation of the labor force to meet the challenge of economic growth in Houston, Texas.
UHD students will be hired in various roles to help support the youth and their families selected to participate in this project.
- Teacher Candidate Students : The project will employ five (5) student workers who are Urban Education Department bilingual teacher candidates or UHD college students. This is also a way to encourage Hispanics to enter the teaching profession. Under the teach-the-teacher model, the student workers will receive literacy education skills from the grant-officers in order to assist families and bilingual students. Each student worker will be responsible for assisting a number of families each semester.
- IT Student Worker : The project will employ one (1) IT student worker (bilingual) in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering Technology to configure laptops and troubleshoots under the supervision of the full-time IT staff and the project officers. This student will configure laptops, answer IT hardware / software-related phone calls, and troubleshoot.
- Story Readers : The project will employ two (2) story readers UHD students in the Department of Arts and Communication and will give professional quality to the e-stories in terms of proper pronunciation, intonation, speed, fluency, and expression.
- Learning Activity Designers : The project will employ two (2) activity designers UHD students in the Computer Science and Engineering Department. Will design activities to accompany e-stories by integrating practices of modeled, shared, and guided reading, literature circles, and close reading. The reading strategies will be used to reinforce phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension strategies, and critical thinking. They will also modify activities submitted by student workers / tutors to make them publishable.
- Illustrators / Graphic Designers : The project will employ two (2) illustrator / graphic designers in the Fine Arts Department to design visuals and characters to bring e-stories to life. They will also prepare images to be used on web pages and project flyers for publicity and marketing.
- Video Editors : The project will employ two (2) video editors in UHD Computer Science, and Engineering Department will be on board to ensure the professional qualities of videos and visuals, in general, are on the professional level before publishing to the Web. One of them will dedicate to the YouTube channel of the grant project.
