Scope of Practice at Kaiser San Diego Medical Center (SDMC)
Adult anesthesia practice with a core team of pediatric anesthesia consultants covering 5‑15% of practice in pediatric anesthesia. Pediatric cases include general surgery, urology, orthopedics, ENT, plastic surgery, oncology, GI, IR, and radiology. Ten to twenty neonatal cases per year from the NICU. SDMC has a pediatric floor but no PICU. Pediatric team members take one week of home pediatric call once a month for NICU cases and children under one year of age or under fourteen ASA 3+. No CRNA supervision for these pediatric core cases.

Department Details
The Department of Anesthesia, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at Kaiser Permanente San Diego includes a diverse group of 70+ physicians and 50+ Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists practising in a team model. Fellows come from multiple ACGME‑accredited anesthesia fellowship programmes : cardiothoracic (5), critical care (3), obstetric (3), pain (10) and pediatric (9) along with regional anesthesia (8), neuroanesthesia (1) and thoracic anesthesia (1).
All partner physicians are diplomates of the American Board of Anesthesiology.
Clinical Scope
Inpatient and outpatient surgeries cover all sub‑specialties except cardiac, trauma and transplant. A general anesthesiologist’s practice includes pediatrics, obstetrics, gynecology, general surgery, neurosurgery, vascular, thoracic, orthopedic surgery and out‑of‑OR cases for gastroenterology, radiology and interventional radiology.
