The Director, Learning & Development (L&D) leads the enterprise-wide strategy and execution of learning and talent development initiatives for Asplundh’s 35,000+ employees.
This highly visible role is responsible for cultivating a culture of continuous learning and growth across the organization -from front-line field employees to executive leadership.
The leader will oversee all aspects of learning and development, including instructional design, leadership development, compliance training, and technical skills development. This role also owns the enterprise Learning Management System (LMS), ensuring that technology, content, and delivery align with Asplundh’s business objectives and operational excellence standards.
This position partners closely with HR Business Partners, operational leaders, and executives to drive workforce capability, succession planning, and talent pipeline development in support of the company’s long-term growth.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
- Develop and execute an enterprise L&D strategy that supports Asplundh’s mission, values, and business goals.
- Serve as a thought partner to the CHRO and senior leadership team on workforce capability and organizational development.
- Lead enterprise programs that accelerate leadership readiness, career progression, and bench strength at all levels.
Learning Operations & Program Delivery
Oversee design, development, and delivery of scalable learning programs across field operations, technical skills, and leadership.Manage and continuously improve the company’s Learning Management System (LMS), ensuring ease of use, compliance tracking, and integration with other HR systems.Establish metrics and analytics to assess training effectiveness and business impact.Content Development
Lead the L&D content creation and instructional design team, ensuring engaging, high-quality learning materials that meet business needs.Build and maintain a library of learning assets that supports both enterprise and business-unit-specific initiatives.Talent Management Partnership
Collaborate with HR Business Partners and business leaders to align learning strategies with talent assessment, succession planning, and workforce planning efforts.Support the development and deployment of talent reviews and leadership assessments to identify and develop high-potential employees.Team Leadership
Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing team of L&D professionals across instructional design, facilitation, and learning technology.Foster a culture of innovation, accountability, and operational excellence within the L&D function.Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in human resources, organizational development, business administration, or related field; master’s degree preferred.10+ years of progressive experience in learning and development, organizational development, or talent management, including leadership of large, distributed teams.Proven success designing and implementing enterprise learning strategies across a diverse, field-based workforce.Strong understanding of adult learning principles, instructional design, and learning technology platforms (preferably Cornerstone or similar LMS).Demonstrated experience integrating learning with broader talent management processes such as succession, performance, and workforce planning.Organizational development experience a strong plus.Exceptional communication, influencing, and executive presence skills.Experience in a large, safety-critical, operational environment (utilities, construction, or related industries) strongly preferred.Ability to travel up to 25% domestically for business needs.Leadership Attributes
