A nurse surveyor must possess excellent communication and writing skills, including the ability to articulate clinical findings in easily understood terms. Moderate computer skills, at the very least, are also required. This is a field position that requires the use of your personal vehicle, in order to travel throughout the state. Overnight stays are required at different frequencies in the various units. Below are descriptions of the nurse surveyor's role in each unit: Federal Unit: A surveyor in this unit investigates complaints and conducts surveys in a variety of settings, such as hospitals, residential treatment centers, home health, hospice, dialysis, and ambulatory surgery centers. The surveyor usually works independently and occasionally with a team. The surveyor will be required to complete all training programs mandated by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The majority of travel can be completed in one day, with overnight stays about 1–2 times a month. Assisted Living Unit: A surveyor in this unit primarily individually investigates a complaint or conducts a survey in assisted living programs or adult medical day care centers. The majority of travel can be completed in one day, with overnight stays about 1–2 times a month. Developmental Disabilities Unit: A surveyor in this unit may individually investigate a complaint or provider-reported incident. They may also work on a team to conduct a licensing or renewal survey. The majority of travel can be completed in one day, with overnight stays about 1–2 times a month. Long Term Care (Nursing Home) Unit: A surveyor in this unit conducts inspections of nursing homes to determine compliance with State and federal regulations. The surveyor will be required to complete all training programs mandated by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services for long term care facilities, including QSEP training.
