Role Overview
The Technical Director is the keystone of our scenic operations, overseeing every technical element from budget and build to safety and scheduling. With a sharp eye for detail and a wide-angle lens for long-term planning, this person leads the shop team including the Assistant Technical Director and ensures that every piece of the scenic puzzle fits together on time, on budget, and with exceptional craftsmanship.
This is a role for a master builder with a producers mindset and a designers soul.
Core Responsibilities
- Project Oversight : Lead technical execution for all events, ensuring scenic elements meet creative, structural, and safety standards
- Team Leadership : Supervise and mentor the Assistant Technical Director, Draftsman, and shop team members
- Budget Management : Create and monitor production budgets for materials, labor, and external vendors; flag risks and control costs
- Scheduling & Planning : Build production timelines, fabrication schedules, and install / strike plans that align with project deadlines
- Vendor & Contractor Relations : Coordinate with external fabricators, riggers, and other contractors as needed
- Design Collaboration : Interpret creative direction into actionable build plans and installation strategies
- Quality Assurance : Ensure all scenic elements leaving the shop meet the highest standards of design and fabrication
- Safety Compliance : Enforce OSHA and local safety regulations, maintain shop safety protocols, and conduct regular inspections
- Inventory Management : Oversee scenic inventory, stock levels, tool maintenance, and asset tracking
- Long-Term Planning : Anticipate equipment needs, staff growth, and shop improvements; contribute to strategic planning initiatives
- Problem Solving : Be the go-to for in-the-moment challenges, whether technical, creative, or logistical
What You Bring
7+ years of experience in scenic production, technical direction, or large-scale fabricationLeadership experience managing teams in a shop or production environmentAdvanced proficiency in 3D AutoCAD, drafting, and technical drawing reviewDeep knowledge of materials, construction methods, rigging, and fabrication workflowsDemonstrated ability to manage complex budgets and timelines with precisionStrong understanding of OSHA guidelines, shop safety practices, and fire code complianceExcellent communication and collaboration skillsPassion for innovation, problem-solving, and producing extraordinary work under pressureBonus Points For

Office Hours : 8 : 00 AM - 5 : 00 PM, Monday through Friday.On call after hours to answer onsite challenges if they ariseSalary & Benefits
