Reports to : Medical Director, ICU

Position Summary

As part of the Critical Care team, the Neuro Intensivist will collaborate closely with the Neurosurgical, Neurologic and Neuroendovascular service as well as the general Critical Care team and manage both neurologic as well as the broader general critical care diseases.

The Neuro Intensivist will have administrative responsibilities including education and developing protocols for Neuro ICU management based on current standards for Neurocritical Care.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities Includes the Following :

  • Understands and adheres to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors.
  • Coordinates the care (evaluation, treatment, admission, and discharge) of patients who are admitted with neurologic and general critical illness.
  • Thoroughly, and with adequate frequency, communicates with patient, appropriate family members, specialty consulting physicians, and hospital staff regarding the status of the admitted patient.
  • Provides education for staff and patients / family with whom the Intensivist interacts.
  • Oversees activities of Advanced Practice Providers (NPs & PAs) in the ICU.
  • Institutes immediate and appropriate intervention in life or disability-threatening emergencies.
  • Documents evaluation of and treatment given to all patients. Provides each patient with discharge instructions, both oral and written. Gives referring physician verbal and written report upon discharge of patient.
  • Works assigned shifts and when on-shift does not leave the Hospital Campus.
  • Attends all relevant professional meetings scheduled for the Department.
  • Participates in chart review and organized activities to reduce length of stay and improve quality outcomes.
  • Participates in institutional initiatives such as disaster planning and response, environment of care / safety, risk management, etc.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Education & Experience Requirements

  • Medical Degree (MD or DO) with Fellowship in Critical Care Medicine or other relevant specialty.
  • Valid NYS Medical License.
  • Valid ACLS Certification.
  • Compliance with CME Requirements (Hospital, Regional, State, and Federal)
  • Board Certified in Neurocritical Care
  • Experience managing patients with acute and unstable neurologic injury

  • May be exposed to chemicals necessary to perform required tasks. Any hazardous chemicals the employee may be exposed to are listed in the hospital’s SDS (Safety Data Sheet) data base and accessed through the hospital’s Intranet site (Employee Tools / SDS Access). A copy of the SDS data base can also be found at the hospital switchboard, saved on a disc.
  • Must be able to move about the hospital, or remain stationary for extended periods of time
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in writing and verbally, have legible handwriting
  • Must have sufficient manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination to perform all the procedures, techniques and skills listed in
  • the delineation of privileges.

  • Ability to position self to assess and care for patients, perform required procedures
