Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS)—Georgia’s largest school district—is hiring a Junior Telecommunications Technician to join our Technology & Innovation Division. This is a hands-on, field-based role perfect for someone eager to learn, grow, and make a real impact in education.
Whether you're fresh out of high school, trade school, or college, we’ll train you and support your development every step of the way.
What You’ll Do
- Install, move, and troubleshoot VoIP phone systems
- Upgrade phone equipment and patch cables
- Maintain intercom systems and bell schedules
- Coordinate with AT&T and internal teams on phone line issues
- Access ceiling grids to inspect data connections
- Use testing tools to trace and patch cables
- Diagnose connectivity issues using web-based tools
- Respond to service tickets professionally
- Keep accurate inventory of telecom equipment
- Work closely with IT, Facilities, and school staff
- Travel daily to schools across Gwinnett County (mileage reimbursed)
- Be part of a supportive team of 6 telecom professionals
What You Bring
3 months to 2 years of experience in telecom, networking, or VoIP (school projects or internships count!)Basic understanding of networking (PoE, IP addressing, VoIP)Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicleWillingness to learn and work independently after trainingFriendly, professional attitude around staff and studentsStrong communication and customer service skillsFamiliarity with Microsoft Office (Teams, Outlook, Excel)Able to pass a background check to work in schoolsBonus Skills (Not Required, But Nice to Have)
Experience with low-voltage cabling (Cat5e / Cat6)Knowledge of enterprise phone systems (Cisco, Avaya, Microsoft Teams, etc.)Understanding of SIP trunking and cloud PBXExperience with intercom systems (Rauland Borg or similar)Technical certifications (CompTIA A+, Network+, etc.)Experience in school or government settingsFlexibility for occasional early or late hoursPhysical Requirements

Monday–Friday, 7 : 00 AM to 4 : 00 PM
(1-hour unpaid lunch)
Training & Mentorship
We’ll provide 2–3 months of hands-on training in VoIP systems, intercoms, and vendor coordination. You’ll shadow senior technicians and receive ongoing mentorship from a team that wants to see you succeed.
