The Department of Classics at the University of Virginia is pleased to announce a search for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Classics to fill the newly endowed Jon D. Mikalson Professorship of Classics expected to begin August 10 2026. We welcome applicants in any field of ancient Latin Literature. Candidates should have a PhD in Classics or a related field by the time of the appointment and demonstrate potential for excellence in both research and teaching. We aim to appoint a junior scholar whose research interests complement those of the current faculty. The Department prides itself on its collegial atmosphere and its robust Graduate and Undergraduate addition to conducting research supervising dissertations and teaching graduate seminars our new colleague will teach undergraduates at all levels in Greek Latin and Classical Civilization courses. They will also contribute to the running of the Department as well as to the broader life of the University. UVA Classics is part of a lively community of faculty who work across programs and departments in classical studies and beyond including such departments as History Religious Studies Art Philosophy and the Karsh Institute for Democracy. The new colleague might strengthen and expand those links and / or propose further collaborative opportunities.
To meet the minimum qualifications for this position applicants must hold a PhD in Classics or a related field.
