Onsite : This role is categorized as onsite. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Orion, MI on a full-time basis.
The Role
As a Lead Business Team Manager (BTM) at Orion Assembly, you will play a central role in managing daily operations across key Body Shop areas, including Lowers / Box, Uppers, ZA / ZJ / Fender, Front / Rear Closures, and a dedicated Quality team. While you will not have direct supervisory responsibility over Group Leaders, you will be accountable for the performance, coordination, and operational execution of these production zones.
This role requires a hands-on leader with strong business acumen, production expertise, and the ability to influence cross-functional teams. You will work closely with Group Leaders, Quality, Engineering, and Maintenance to ensure that production targets are met, issues are resolved quickly, and continuous improvement is embedded into daily operations. Your leadership will directly impact launch readiness, build quality, and team alignment across the shop.
What You'll Do
- Oversee daily operations across assigned Body Shop zones, ensuring adherence to safety, quality, and throughput targets.
- Coordinate with Group Leaders to address production challenges, escalate issues, and drive corrective actions.
- Monitor build schedules and ensure alignment with launch milestones and takt time requirements.
- Influence team performance by fostering collaboration between production, quality, and support teams.
- Support Group Leaders in executing daily plans, resolving bottlenecks, and maintaining process discipline.
- Promote open communication and a performance-driven culture across all assigned areas.
- Partner with the Quality team to monitor defect trends, drive root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions.
- Ensure compliance with Process Control Plans (PCPs), GMS principles, and union agreements.
- Support scrap reduction efforts and quality containment strategies during launch and ramp-up
- Collaborate with Engineering, Maintenance, and IT to support automation systems, equipment uptime, and process improvements.
- Participate in layout reviews, zone board reviews, and launch readiness assessments.
- Coordinate with Material and Logistics teams to ensure part availability and flow.
- Analyze production metrics to inform short- and long-term planning decisions.
- Contribute to staffing plans, layout optimization, and operational readiness for new initiatives.
- Support continuous improvement projects and Kaizen events focused on area-specific challenges.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in operations management, engineering, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience).5+ years of experience in automotive manufacturing or production leadership.Prior experience managing multiple production zones or supporting launch operations preferred.Strong understanding of Body Shop manufacturing processes, lean principles, and quality standards.Familiarity with Global Manufacturing Systems (GMS), PCPs, and union agreementsPreferred Qualifications
Experience supporting new vehicle program launches and managing high-complexity production areas.Familiarity with Body Shop layout planning, staffing models, and zone board reviews.Demonstrated success driving performance across cross-functional teams without direct supervisory authority.Strong background in quality containment, scrap reduction, and process optimization.Ability to lead through influence and build alignment across diverse teams and shifts.Ability to assess production data and resolve complex operational challenges.Proven ability to drive team outcomes and influence performance across multiple production zones.Skilled in mentoring and coaching Group Leaders and support teams to foster a high-performing environment.Exceptional communication skills to collaborate with Group Leaders, union representatives, and plant leadership.Ability to build relationships that promote teamwork, accountability, and open dialogue.Solid understanding of business processes and operational planning.
