  • LEAD MECHANIC

Employee serves as Lead Mechanic - responsible for planning, overseeing, and assisting with fleet maintenance, repair, and equipment purchasing for all departments, as well as maintenance facility oversight.

  • ESSENTIAL DUTIES :
  • Plans, assigns, and directs workforce and material resources to properly maintain and repair the Town’s fleet.
  • Consults with and offers direction and leadership to Department Heads regarding their equipment needs and maintenance problems.
  • Receives, reviews, and prioritizes daily equipment repair and maintenance work orders.
  • Responsible for entering, managing, and reporting data for the Town’s Fleet Maintenance and Fuel Management programs.
  • Examines work performed, assuring proper completion, and offers technical assistance as needed.
  • Supervises, directs training, and disciplines department employees. Regularly evaluates employee performance and assists with hiring personnel.
  • Maintains and updates records of vehicle inspection stickers, vehicle registration and insurance. Ensures department compliance with state D.O L. and Federal OSHA regulations.
  • Oversees and authorizes invoicing and maintenance reporting to all Town departments.
  • Maintains and evaluates serviceability status of Town Fleet, prices, and recommends replacement to Director of Public Works and other Department Heads.
  • Maintains inventory of supplies, parts, and tools. Meets with sale representatives on new equipment and parts. Helps prepare bid specifications, and authorizes purchases as needed.
  • Oversees fabrication of special equipment and repair parts as needed.
  • Assists in preparing annual budget request and administers budget upon approval.
  • Periodically plans and implements capital improvement projects for the department.
  • Responsible for tool and facility inspections, SPCC and SWPPP plans. Occasionally attends technical workshops and training sessions.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
  • JOB REQUIREMENTS
  • Extensive knowledge of municipal fleet equipment for the following departments : Police, Fire, Rescue, Pollution Control, Transfer & Recycling, Highway, Parks, and School. Knowledge of shop mechanics and ability to perform necessary inspections / repairs of vehicles and equipment, and determine appropriate methods to secure necessary parts, tools and supplies to make repairs.
  • Knowledge of principles involved in planning and developing annual budget request, and ability to administer budget upon approval.
  • Familiar with principles involved in cost effective purchasing of equipment and vehicles and related supplies and materials.
  • Ability to direct and supervise others; provide leadership for employees and effectively communicate with Town officials, department heads, fleet operators, other governmental jurisdictions, and members of the general public during varied situations and circumstances.
  • Ability to operate motor vehicles / equipment legally and safely – Class B License (Class A preferred), School Bus endorsement. Must have State Inspection Licenses (A,D, E, B), be air brake certified, ASE certified, and have complete set of tools, appropriate to perform the majority of mechanical tasks.
  • Must be familiar with scan tools, computers and other electronic diagnostic equipment utilized in our operations.
  • Must be able to operate welders, torches, cutters, and other electric / air / gas powered hand tools. Must have experience using vehicle lifts and jack stands.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent. A minimum of ten (10) years in a combination of experience and / or training in the maintenance of light to heavy equipment. A minimum of five (5) years of progressive supervisory experience.

    Experience with computer software such as but not limited to : Excel, Outlook, Word, Fuel management systems

  • SUPERVISORY FUNCTIONS
  • Employee is responsible for overseeing maintenance operations and ensuring proper repair and maintenance of Town and School fleet. Independent judgment is needed in selecting most appropriate procedures to meet specific problems or circumstances. Employee is directly responsible for a wide variety of equipment, vehicles and safety of others. Employee is directly responsible to oversee and train the Mechanic.

  • SUPERVISORY ACCOUNTABILITY
  • Employee makes a major contribution in ensuring proper operation / selection and maintenance of the Town’s fleet. Responsible for supervising daily operations and mechanics, along with implementing, monitoring, and assisting with developing general policies and safety programs.

  • SCOPE OF WORK OPERATIONS
  • Employee maintains frequent contact with department subordinate personnel, Town departments, other governmental jurisdictions, sales representatives, and members of general public during varied situations and circumstances.

    Reports directly to the PW Director

The employee must frequently lift and / or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift weights up to 100 pounds.

    Extended hours required during winter operations.

    Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
