Job Summary

The School of Humanities at the University of West Georgia seeks to hire two current undergraduate students to work on a Public Humanities project in spring semester 2026. Directed by Dr. Yvonne Fuentes (International Languages and Cultures) and Dr. Patrick Erben (English), the project focuses on the Kennedy Chapel located on the UWG campus.

The students will primarily work on creating a public-facing website (hosted by UWG web services) that will focus on the Kennedy Chapel¿s significance for the history of Carrollton and UWG as well as its role as an important landmark in the development of Carroll County (which will mark the 200-year anniversary of its founding in 1826). The goal of the website is to provide openly accessible information (including photos, archival documents, oral narratives, etc.) on the Chapel and thus generate broad interest among residents of West Georgia and across the state in the story of our community, our campus, and this unique landmark.

We seek students with excellent communication skills (both oral and written), creativity, and a keen interest in community engagement. The positions will thus provide an excellent experiential learning opportunity for the hired students. Prior experience with website creation and digital design would be a plus but is not required. Successful job candidates must, however, be willing to learn basic web design skills (beginning with a required 2-hour training session at the beginning of the semester provided by the UWG Director of Web Services).

We will consider only students who are majors in one (or two) of the disciplines in the UWG School of Humanities (English, History, International Languages and Cultures, and Philosophy) and have entered their major sequence by or before the beginning of spring 2026. The two students hired are expected to collaborate with each other and must thus be comfortable with teamwork. The students will be supervised by Dr. Fuentes and Dr. Erben, who will provide expectations for the contents of the project, materials to be featured, as well as a general design framework.

Ideally, each student will work from the beginning of classes in January 2026 through the end of April, with a pay of $300 / month ($1200 total). The work expectation is 5 h / week for the duration of the semester. Alternatively, with an early February start date, students would work 3 months with a weekly work expectation of 6.45 and a monthly pay of $400 ($1200 total).

Required Qualifications

  • Applicants must be majors in English, International Languages and Cultures, History, or Philosophy. Applicants must have, as a minimum, entered their major course sequence when they begin work on this project (students still mostly completing core requirements will not be considered).
  • Must be willing to learn basic web design skills (beginning with a required 2-hour training session at the beginning of the semester provided by the UWG Director of Web Services).
  • The two students hired are expected to collaborate with each other and must thus be comfortable with teamwork.

Physical Requirements / Working Conditions

  • The two students must be able to meet each other as well as the supervising professor and work in-person in a space provided for them on the 1st floor of the Ingram Library. Though some work may be done remotely, the general expectation is for the students to work on the project in-person on the Carrollton UWG campus. While coursework always comes first, the hired students are expected to prioritize their work on this project over any off-campus employment (being enrolled in a full-time teaching internship, for example, would disqualify applicants from this position, as the internship duties would generally preclude students from meeting / working on campus during normal business hours).
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • We seek students with excellent communication skills (both oral and written), creativity, and a keen interest in community engagement.
  • Required Documents to Attach

  • Letter expressing interest in the position and summarizing any relevant experience the student has, including course work, volunteer work (on and off campus), and professional experience.
  • A resume / curriculum vitae.
  • Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Prior experience with website creation and / or digital design would be a plus but is not required.

Applicants may be subject to a pre-employment drug test. Offers are made expressly subject to the applicable federal and state laws, to the statutes, rules and regulations of this institution and to the Bylaws and Policies of the Board of Regents (BOR) of the University System of Georgia (USG), which are available for your inspection upon request.
