Department Overview
The Department of Sterile and Materials Processing is a state-of-the-art instrument processing and sterilizing facility. The Sterile Processing Department assists in the decontamination, High Level Disinfection (HLD), assembling, sterilization, and distribution of clean and sterile surgical instruments, trays, and pans. These functions are performed using state-of-the-art decontamination, HLD, and sterilization capital equipment. Instruments, trays, and pans are assembled, processed, and distributed.

Responsibilities
Inspect, assemble, package, and sterilize surgical instrument pans, procedural trays, technical equipment, and surgical case carts. Select method of packaging and sterilization, consulting with Processing Manager as needed.Examine surgical instrumentation for cleanliness and proper assembly and function. Assemble instrument sets ensuring appropriate number and type of instrument per Client software program protocols.Operate steam sterilizers in accordance with established procedures; check time, pressure, and temperature gauges frequently to attain and maintain proper levels; load and unload sterilizers and place items on shelves for distribution.Perform simple maintenance of sterilizers such as cleaning drain baskets. Assure sterility by preparing cultures, reviewing test packs processed, interpreting the results, and completing required documentation.Check and adjust medical equipment according to specific procedures to ensure instruments and equipment operate according to specifications prior to issuing. Send all equipment not meeting specifications to appropriate area for repair.Decontaminate surgical instruments and equipment following established procedures; prevent cross-contamination per established procedures.Receive and store supplies from outside vendors and Hospital areas; check stock as it is received against requisitions; document stock received and report discrepancies.Maintain records of equipment inventory use, frequency of servicing, and equipment not meeting specifications that are referred for repair.Responsible for quality assurance on all sterile supplies and instruments. Perform daily quality assurance checks on stock levels, sterility dates, and accuracy of procedure carts.Must Haves
