This position will be responsible for maintaining our state roadway systems.

Operates vehicles and a variety of small and medium equipment that may include, but not limited to; front end loader, skid steer loader, grader, lift equipment, tractor trailer, drainage vacuum truck, small bulldozer and asphalt repair truck while performing bridge and roadway maintenance; performs minor maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated and assists in the repairs of this equipment; checks and adds fluids, checks / adjusts brakes, maintains proper air pressure in all tires, etc. Cleans and washes equipment. Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways. Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments with minimal supervision. Performs tree trimming, rough carpentry, masonry, painting and / or assists in the assembly and erection of highway signs. Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic). Assists with crew activity reports as needed.
Knowledge of mathematical calculations; standard safety rules and procedures. Skills in operating a variety of hand and power tools. Operating and performing minor maintenance on small / medium equipment and vehicles. Ability to operate a variety of heavy equipment. Read and understand job-related materials and fill out reports and forms. Maintain and repair highways, bridges and / or other highway structures. Communicate both verbally and in writing, including following oral / written instructions. Develop and maintain effective working relationships with others. Lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds. Stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on a frequent basis. Work outdoors in various weather conditions on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic. Work independently. Stand for an extended period of time.
Due to the nature of this position, the incumbent must respond to emergencies when necessary. Possess a valid Class "B" CDL (Commercial Drivers License) Instructional Permit is required at time of hire. While on-duty status, the positions incumbent must be readily available to operate a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV), consistent with the type of Commercial Driver's License (CDL) the incumbent is required to possess, or on a routine basis performs other CMV safety-sensitive functions. Obtains certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) Intermediate Level within on year and maintains. The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates.
Requires one year of experience operating small / medium equipment and vehicles. Possess a valid Class "B" CDL (Commercial Drivers License) Instructional Permit is required at the time of hire. A valid Class "B" CDL with air brakes is required within 10 months of appointment to the position.
