Overview

Product Design Director, Audit, Credit & Financial Risk Management (CFRM) and Enterprise Services Risk (ESR) team, part of the Risk and Audit Design team within Capital One’s Experience Design organization. The Audit, CFRM, and ESR portfolio consists of design professionals dedicated to safeguarding Capital One through supporting critical platforms in credit and financial risk management, enterprise services risk, and internal auditing capabilities and processes. This team collaborates with enterprise Risk business partners across Capital One, including business owners, product owners & managers, and engineering partners, to push innovation and user experiences to the edge of what is possible and beyond. The Experience Design team aims to enrich customers’ digital and physical experiences, creating memorable, meaningful product experiences that build the Capital One brand with humanity and drive business advantage and innovation.

Role Expectations

As a Director of the Audit, CFRM, and ESR team, you’ll lead a talented, cross-disciplinary team of designers and collaborate deeply with our research teams and Product and Tech leadership. You’ll be responsible for leading high-impact, highly complex projects and defining and driving design strategy that informs the higher-level vision of the organization and aligns to business objectives.

This is a people leadership role, requiring prior managerial experience in building and leading agile, professional design teams. We seek premier people leaders who can guide, mentor, and integrate a design team with business partners from inception to product delivery. The ideal candidate will have strong business acumen with experience in the financial services sector and / or risk management practices, and a clear understanding of how design quality connects to delivering business outcomes. The leader should be able to drive a strategic vision that extends beyond current work and sustain effective cross-functional partnerships to guide the team into the future.

Here are some of the expected competencies for this role :

  • Product Design Expertise : Leverage established expertise and leadership in product design to elevate the quality and maturity of Capital One’s design practice. Across interaction, visual and service design, collaborate with cross-functional partners to oversee and optimize tools, platforms, frameworks and design systems, enabling the team to develop artifacts such as vision stories, journey maps, blueprints, high-fidelity designs and prototypes.
  • Leadership : Create conditions for a positive and inclusive team environment and set a vision for an inclusive, collaborative culture that makes the team feel valued and heard.
  • Human-Centered : Champion voices of customers and partners, integrating business and customer outcomes to exceed baseline expectations.
  • Business-Focused : Demonstrate knowledge of products, processes, customers, competitors and market trends to shape how Design engages and solves business challenges.
  • Problem-Solving : Share insights around technical advances and data capabilities, helping larger teams navigate technical boundaries to enable bold solutions, data destinations and efficiency.
  • Collaboration : Connect across teams, portfolios, platforms and LOBs to drive coherent experiences, accelerate delivery and elevate design value.
  • Communication : Present work to various levels, integrating design frameworks, data and research insights to influence senior stakeholders and achieve impactful results.

The ideal candidate has a strong portfolio demonstrating leadership, process, results and impact.

Basic Qualifications :

  • At least 8 years of experience in a product design role
  • At least 3 years of experience leading design teams
  • Preferred Qualifications :

  • 10+ years of experience in product design
  • 5+ years of experience leading design teams
  • Experience in a design toolkit spanning product design, service design, design strategy and content design
  • Experience leading product design teams across UX and UI, strategy, content and research from strategy through delivery to market
  • Experience partnering with product managers, engineers, marketing and analytics leaders across multiple business lines to shape strategy, OKRs, roadmaps and operating models
  • Experience working within a design system
  • Proficiency with web and mobile technologies and platforms, navigating technology considerations to drive decisions
  • Expertise with design and prototyping tools such as Figma
  • Experience managing an interdisciplinary design team
  • Proficiency in business case development, grounding design decisions in business value
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and relationship building across complex organizations
  • Exceptional people management and development skills

    The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Salaries are for candidates hired to work in one of these locations and reflect the amount Capital One is willing to pay at posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated.

    McLean, VA : $226,000 - $257,900 for Director, Design; New York, NY : $246,500 - $281,300 for Director, Design; Richmond, VA : $205,400 - $234,400 for Director, Design

    Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual salary offered will be in the offer letter. This role may be eligible for performance-based incentive compensation, including cash bonuses and / or long-term incentives.
