Equipment Operator

This position will perform minor maintenance and servicing work. Your specific responsibilities include performing minor maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated and assisting in the repairs of this equipment; checking and adding fluids, checking / adjusting brakes, maintaining proper air pressure in all tires, etc. Cleans and washes equipment. After obtaining the required instructional CDL permit or license, operates vehicles and a variety of small and medium equipment that may include, but not limited to; dump truck, front end loader, skid steer loader, grader, lift equipment, small bulldozer and asphalt repair truck while performing bridge and roadway maintenance. Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways. Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments with minimal supervision. Performs tree trimming, rough carpentry, masonry, painting and / or assists in the assembly and erection of highway signs. Performs temporary traffic control (maintenance of traffic). Assists with crew activity reports as needed.
The successful candidate will have the following required knowledge, skills, and abilities : knowledge of mathematical calculations and standard safety rules and procedures; skills in operating a variety of hand and power tools and operating and performing minor maintenance on small / medium equipment and vehicles; ability to operate a variety of heavy equipment, read and understand job-related materials and fill out reports and forms, maintain and repair highways, bridges and / or other highway structures, communicate both verbally and in writing, including following oral / written instructions, develop and maintain effective working relationships with others, lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds, stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on a frequent basis, work outdoors in various weather conditions on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic, work independently, and stand for an extended period of time. Other job-related requirements include responding to emergencies and being "on-call" (24-hour duty) when necessary, possessing a valid Class "B" CDL (Commercial Driver's License) Instructional Permit is required at time of hire, obtaining a valid Class "B" CDL with air brakes within 180 days of hire, and obtaining certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) Intermediate Level within one year and maintaining.
Minimum qualifications include one year of experience in the operation of heavy equipment, possessing a valid Class "B" CDL Instructional Permit is required at time of hire, and a valid Class "B" CDL with air brakes is required within 180 days of hire. This position requires a valid Class (B) driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department's Driver's Record Requirements Policy. An unacceptable driving record is defined as any of the following : three (3) or more moving violations in the past three (3) years that accumulate three (3) or more points per violation; any two (2) convictions of reckless driving in the past three (3) years; a suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past three (3) years; and a suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction, in the past four (4) years. Your driving record will be reviewed and the status of your driver license confirmed. In order to be eligible for hire into a position requiring a Commercial Driver License (CDL), applicants must register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's Drug and Alcohol (FMCSA) Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a pre-employment query.
