Position Summary
Working under the direct supervision of the County Judge and reporting to and engaging with the County Commissioners Court, the Chief of Staff serves as a trusted liaison and administrative professional, managing the daily operations of the County Judge’s Office and supporting high-level governmental functions. This position requires exceptional organizational skills, political sensitivity, discretion, diplomacy, and the ability to manage multiple complex projects in a fast-paced and often rapidly changing environment.
Qualifications, Education, and Experience :
To be successful in the job, the incumbent must possess and / or rapidly acquire the following qualifications.
- Bachelor’s degree from an institution accredited by the Department of Education in Public Administration, Political Science, Business Administration, or a related field; or
- Two or more years of progressively responsible administrative experience supporting executive-level officials.
- Proficient (preferably strong) skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook), calendar and document management systems, and virtual meeting platforms.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Strong problem-solving ability.
- Good judgment with the strong ability to handle matters professionally and with diplomacy, discretion, and appropriate confidentiality.
- Strong research skills.
Preferred Qualifications, Education and Experience :

Maintain and manage the County Judge’s calendar, schedule meetings, coordinate travel, and prioritize appointments.Draft, review, and professionally edit correspondence, memoranda, reports, and presentations for the County Judge and / or County Commissioners.Prepare agendas, take minutes, and ensure follow-up for internal and other meetings.Operational Leadership
Execution of Priorities : Drive the implementation of the County Judge’s and the Commissioners Court’s key initiatives, ensuring projects stay on track and align with goals.Process Optimization : Streamline workflows, improve communication, and enhance organizational efficiency by identifying and addressing bottlenecks.Cross-Functional Coordination : Align departments or teams, facilitating collaboration to ensure organizational goals are met.Gatekeeper and Communicator
Time Management : Manage the County Judge’s schedule, prioritizing high-impact meetings and shielding him or her from low-value demands.Communications : Act as a liaison between the executive, internal teams, and external stakeholders, ensuring clear and consistent messaging.Information Filter : Synthesize and prioritize information flowing to the County Judge and County Commissioners, delivering critical information and data for decision-making.Team and Culture Steward

Project Leadership : Lead or oversee high-priority, often sensitive projects that don’t fit neatly into one department’s purview.Crisis Response : Act as a point person during crises, coordinating responses and ensuring the County Judge and County Commissioners are appropriately informed and prepared.Office Management
Oversee the administrative operations of the County Judge’s Office, including budget tracking, supply orders, records management, and workflow coordination.Serve as a point of contact between the County Judge and other elected officials, department heads, community stakeholders, the media, and the public.Communication and Public Relations
Handle sensitive and / or confidential information effectively with a high degree of discretion and diplomacy.Respond to inquiries from constituents, staff, and other parties with professionalism and tact.Prepare drafts of public statements, press releases, or briefing materials as directed.Policy and Legislative Support
Assist in research and analysis of policies, legislation, and governmental issues impacting the County Judge’s Office or the County.Coordinate with staff, legal counsel, and outside agencies as appropriate on various projects or initiatives.Event and Meeting Coordination
Plan and coordinate official events, press conferences, public forums, and community outreach efforts.Ensure all logistics and materials are prepared for meetings or appearances involving the County Judge and Commissioners Court.Other Duties and Responsibilities

Know and follow all departmental and County policies and procedures, and the instructions and guidance of the County Commissioners.Communicate effectively with all coworkers and others (internally and externally) in order to provide, exchange, or verify information, answer inquiries, address issues, or resolve and / or report problems or complaints.Operate office equipment, such as computers, fax machines, copiers, cameras, and phone systems, and arrange for repairs when equipment malfunctions.Take up matters affecting me and my position with my immediate superior and through proper channels.Work safely and follow all safety policies, procedures, and accident reporting requirements.Perform other duties as assigned or necessary in fulfilling the position’s requirements.PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
