Job Summary
Peer Mentors are part-time, student workers within the CHOICE Program for Inclusive Learning at East Georgia State College. Peer Mentors work to support program students in their transition to college life through academic success mentoring, an in-program curriculum, audited college courses, Student Life & New Students Orientation activities, engaging students in campus life and connecting them to academic departments, working with associated EGSC faculty and staff, and supporting the overall mission of the CHOICE Program.
Responsibilities
Basic Computer skills necessary to assist students with computer based academic platforms used by instructors to provide instruction.
Maintain confidentiality of any shared information.
Serve as an energetic and enthusiastic mentor to help CHOICE students succeed academically and socially at EGSC.
Develop and maintain relationships with and provide assistance and support for CHOICE students / staff / faculty by assisting with smooth transitions, campus acclimation, and development of a sense of belonging on campus.
Serve as a resource / advocate for CHOICE students in the academic / social setting (s)
Help facilitate individualized and group study sessions
Participate in training, programs and activities sponsored by EGSC / CHOICE
Work both independently and as part of a team with fellow Peer Mentors.
Attend group meetings for staff and entire CHOICE Program members
Serve as a positive role model in the academic / social setting (s)
Participate in and complete all other tasks deemed necessary by the CHOICE Program Director
Required Qualifications
The student's EGSC schedule must reflect at least six credit hours and must be in good academic standing.
Ability to work 16-19 hours a week Mon-Friday in blocks of 3 to 4 hours per day (AM / PM).
Experience facilitating small group activities to include academic, social, or recreational.
Ability to perform basic computer skills.
Ability to academic assists and social guidance for students with disabilities in the academic and social setting.
Have strong oral and written skills.
Evidence of organizational and leadership skills.
Proposed Salary
$13.00 hour
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Knowledge of resources, active listening skills, structured problem-solving techniques, and awareness of ethical obligations that come with helping positions.
Knowledge of basic computer application skills and how to study techniques as it applies to academic learning.
Peer Mentors should be proactive, academically successful, well organized, empathetic students committed to using their time in the program to help other students. Consistent competency in both individual and group presentations, written communication, time management and confidentiality will be key to success in this program.
