About the Role :

The Emergency Medical Technician Advanced (EMT-A) at Critical Access Hospital - Grantsville (CAHGR) plays a vital role in delivering high-quality pre-hospital emergency medical care to patients in urgent and life-threatening situations. This position requires rapid assessment, stabilization, and transportation of patients while ensuring adherence to established medical protocols and safety standards. The EMT-A collaborates closely with other healthcare professionals, emergency responders, and hospital staff to provide seamless patient care from the scene to definitive treatment facilities. The role demands strong decision-making skills under pressure, excellent communication abilities, and a compassionate approach to patient care. Ultimately, the EMT-A contributes significantly to improving patient outcomes and community health through timely and effective emergency medical interventions.

Minimum Qualifications :

  • Valid and current certification as an Emergency Medical Technician Advanced (EMT-A) or equivalent as recognized by the state of West Virginia.
  • Completion of an accredited EMT-A training program and successful passing of the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) Advanced exam or state equivalent.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record and ability to operate emergency vehicles safely.
  • Ability to work flexible shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays as required by emergency response needs.

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Experience working in a critical access hospital or rural emergency medical services setting.
  • Certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
  • Familiarity with electronic patient care reporting (ePCR) systems.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with experience in community outreach or public education related to emergency medical services.
  • Additional language proficiency to effectively communicate with diverse patient populations.

    • Responsibilities :

  • Respond promptly to emergency calls and provide advanced pre-hospital medical care to patients at the scene and during transport.
  • Perform comprehensive patient assessments, including vital signs, medical history, and physical examinations to determine the appropriate course of treatment.
  • Administer advanced life support procedures such as airway management, intravenous therapy, medication administration, and cardiac monitoring as authorized by protocols.
  • Coordinate with dispatch, hospital staff, and other emergency services to ensure efficient patient handoff and continuity of care.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed patient care reports and documentation in compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure all emergency medical equipment and vehicles are properly maintained, stocked, and ready for immediate use.
  • Participate in ongoing training, drills, and continuing education to stay current with medical advancements and certification requirements.

    The EMT-A utilizes advanced clinical skills daily to assess and manage a wide range of medical emergencies, ensuring patient stabilization and safety. Effective communication skills are essential for interacting with patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams to provide clear instructions and compassionate care. Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities enable the EMT-A to make swift decisions in dynamic and high-pressure environments. Technical proficiency with medical equipment and electronic documentation systems supports accurate patient monitoring and record-keeping. Additionally, teamwork and adaptability are crucial as the EMT-A collaborates with various emergency responders and hospital personnel to deliver coordinated and efficient patient care.
