Desktop Technician

Position Summary :

Responsible for the installation, troubleshooting, technical maintenance, and repairs / fixes of University-owned computers in classrooms, labs offices, and residence halls. Maintain, support, and secure University staff and lab computers. Create, manage, and install images for leased computers. Act as liaison between University and vendors to generate equipment configurations and quotes. Deploy new leased computers : locate, clean, and palletize old computers for shipment back to leasing company. Maintain University computer equipment inventory. Prioritizing and scheduling for completion of work orders. Consults and collaborates with network and Help Desk personnel to optimize university computer hardware and software use. Keep abreast of current technology.

Salary : $23.00-25.00 / Hour, depending on experience. This is a 35 hour / week position.

Essential Functions :

With or without reasonable accommodations the incumbent must be able to read and write and speak the English language at a college level, be capable of performing sometimes complex mathematical calculations, statistical calculations and other higher mathematical operations, must be able to communicate with all levels of the institution in written and spoken form. The individual must be able to work independently . The ability to maintain regular and prompt attendance is essential to the successful performance of this position. Other essential functions may be required.

Other Duties & Responsibilities :

• Maintain and support University staff and lab computers. Involves research, diagnostics, and troubleshooting of computer related issues, vendor interface, and replacement of parts as needed.
• Create, manage, and install images for leased computers. Involves securing necessary licensed software for each area, testing and evaluating supported software, developing and utilizing required specialized tools for creation and deployment of images. Depending on the time of year, this can occupy up to 90%, at other times as little 7%.
• Act as liaison between University and vendors, generating equipment configurations and quotes. Involves contacting sales representatives and tailoring equipment to meet the needs and requirements of University standards and clients requirements. This could range anywhere from 15% to 2% depending on University's computer needs.
• Deploy new leased computers; locate, clean, and palletize old computers for shipment back to leasing company. Involves locating leased computers to be recycled on campus, collecting and the removing of data from them before palletizing and return to leasing company. Also involves delivery of new imaged equipment to staff / faculty / labs, securing, transferring files, and setting up peripherals. Depending on time of year, deployment can occupy as much as 90% of our time, or as little as 2%.
• Maintain University computer equipment inventory. Involves recording equipment purchased (when coming through ITS) in appropriate formats and locations, and tagging with asset / tracking numbers. This ranges between 10% to 1% of our time depending on the time of year.
• Prioritizing and scheduling for completion of work orders. Involves constant daily monitoring of work orders in relation to other current / pending works in progress.
• Consult and collaborate with network and Help Desk personnel to optimize University computer hardware and software use. Involves regular contact with said personnel to keep each updated as to the state of current jobs.
• Keep abreast of current technology. Involves reading and research of various media and computer lists and groups such as Resnet, etc., to keep up with computer related issues.
• Provides advanced Windows Support to the Helpdesk. Involves training Helpdesk staff in new threats and working to develop solutions to developing issues. Also includes backing up Desktop support Microcomputer Technical support Specialist.
• Works with the Terminal Server group to provide a customizable and effective working template. Involves installing and configuring the terminal services server as well as researching and implementing terminal service applications.
• Works with Networking to provide administration / support for Sophos Anti-Virus. Involves creating new virus scanner packages, updating server software, and providing elevated support for all Sophos anti-virus issues.
• Provides backup to Network Services. Involves being on call for network emergencies as well as covering sick days and vacation days.
• Provides backup to Helpdesk Team, including covering sick days and vacation days.
• Maintains Macintosh servers. Involves developing and maintaining all Macintosh server-side services including Open directory, Jabber Server, NetBoot (imaging), XGrid, and Software-Update.
• Maintains and deploys wireless access points across campus. Involves testing and implementing wireless technology in an enterprise environment.
• Develops new wireless technologies. Involves researching and testing wireless access points in an enterprise environment.
• Maintains a safe working environment within and around their facilities and associated equipment and supplies including, but +not limited to, obtaining Safety Data Sheet (SDS) information pertaining to any hazards associated with their work environment.
• Safety : Participate in safety training and comply with safety rules, regulations, and protocols.
• Perform additional duties and assist with special projects as assigned.
• Supports and assists in creating intersections for faculty, staff and students that will assist in transforming people's lives.
• Supports and assists in creating an evolving culture of mentoring and rich engagement opportunities for faculty, staff, and students.

A respiratory function test and the ability to use respirators may be required. Stairs and uneven surfaces may be present; artificial lifts, etc. may or may not be available. The position may require the incumbent to walk outdoors in all types of weather to other buildings or offices located on the campus. The Campus is located in an area that contains numerous hills and slopes and may not always be fully accessible for mobility impaired individuals.
