Departmental Overview

UC Berkeley Youth Recreation (formerly Cal Youth Camps) leads the way in providing summer camps for kids of all ages. Located on the UC Berkeley campus for more than 60 years, we offer high-caliber, impactful, and fun camps and year-round programming.

Position Summary

Gymnastics Team / Rec Coaches are instructors for recreational gymnasts and competitive gymnasts under the supervision of the Gymnastics Head Coach. These coaches are responsible for implementing the curriculum developed by the Leads and Gymnastics Head Coach.

These coaches have the capabilities to coach gymnastics recreationally, meaning athletes who are on the non-competitive track. These coaches train, support, and implement gymnastics activities for a wide range of ages. These coaches guide athletes through the basic fundamentals of gymnastics, while encouraging an active, safe, and engaging environment.

Additionally, these coaches are members of the Team program where they are dedicated to the year-round competitive program. These coaches guide each athlete through the year-round competitive season, while aiding in the competitive expectations for each level. They have the expectation of organizing, supporting, and guiding team athletes throughout the competitive year. Each coach will create custom high-level lesson plans with up-to- date curriculum, while following proper skill progressions. Coaches will have open communication with the adults of each competitive athlete, and hold conferences throughout the year. These coaches are expected to continue with a year-round commitment to the competitive athletes.

These individuals are vital to Golden Bears Youth Gymnastics, as they are the individuals implementing the daily programming, performing class requirements, and following safety guidelines.

The First Review Date for this job is : 02 / 19 / 2025. This is an ongoing hiring process with multiple positions available. Responsibilities

PLANNING AND PROGRAMMATIC DEVELOPMENT

  • Develop class plans and / or workouts in compliance with set requirements and standards for assigned programs in coordination with Head Coach and Gymnastics Leads.
  • Establish safety practices and expectations for each class in compliance with the Golden Bear Youth Gymnastics program, the Recreational Sports Department, and as advised or directed by the Head Coach.

PROGRAM INSTRUCTION & FACILITATION GENERAL PROGRAM OVERVIEW

  • Provide training, support and coaching to competitive and recreational youth.
  • Maintain and promote the health, safety, and well-being of youth.
  • Adhere to and understand all stated policies and procedures of the Recreational Sports Department, and UC Berkeley, while providing a safe, fun, and educational skills-based experience for all youth gymnasts / participants in accordance with USAG standards.
  • Implement class and / or workout requirements for assigned areas in coordination with Head Coach and Gymnastics Leads.
  • TEAM PROGRAM OVERVIEW

  • Support Special Events and represent Golden Bears Youth Gymnastics at external events, meets, and competitions as assigned.
  • Implement competitive level training in preparation for competitions.
  • Maintain USAG professional certifications required to train competitive athletes, SafeSport, U110, U100, Professional, Background.
  • Aid in curriculum development of competitive athletes.
  • Engage in continuing education to further develop training abilities.
  • MISCELLANEOUS

  • Administer first aid as needed and in accordance with training / certification.
  • Support Lead Coach with ensuring all staff have safe and appropriate equipment and supplies.
  • Adapt to new situations and sudden changes or problems.
  • Display appropriate behavior (action and language) around gymnasts / participants, parents, and staff.
  • COMMUNICATION

  • Communicate and resolve issues with parents of gymnasts on gymnasts' progress or perceived problems.
  • Communicate with fellow staff members and Lead coaches during staff meetings.
  • Required Qualifications

  • Service orientation, judgment and decision-making, critical thinking, develop original ideas, creative problem-solving skills in a varied and challenging environment.
  • Must be able to work effectively, across all organization levels, internally and externally.
  • Client service minded, entrepreneurial spirit and creative thinking.
  • Must have highly effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be proficient in the use of basic computer applications.
  • Knowledge of and / or can quickly learn campus policies and procedures.
  • At least one year (or 12 months) previous experience leading recreational programs for youth.
  • High School Diploma and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification to instruct in the applicable recreational sports program or equivalent experience.
  • Red Cross Infant / Child / Adult CPR certification.
  • At least one year (or 12 months) previous experience leading recreational programs for youth.
  • Salary & Benefits

    This is a 12-month, part-time (14 hours / week), contract appointment. This is a non-exempt position, which is paid biweekly at an hourly rate.

    Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

    The budgeted hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $18.67 - $32.00.
