CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER, CARB-X (REMOTE - WORLDWIDE)
CARB-X has an exciting opportunity for a talented individual to join our team in the role of Chief Financial Officer. Our organization is restoring the global R&D pipeline for antibacterials, preventatives, and diagnostics, so that no one should die from a bacterial infection. Six G7 governments and three premier foundations support our global work, committing approximately $500M over the next 7 years. Since inception, we have supported over 100 programs, across more than a dozen countries.
The CFO will be a member of the CARB-X Executive Team and will oversee the financial strategy, budget development, grant management, and financial reporting. The position is virtual and may operate across US and European time zones.
Responsibilities
- Financial strategy, budget development and resource management : create dynamic 2-year and 5-year financial plans with portfolio modeling to inform investment decisions; provide financial background and analysis for the CARB-X Investment Committee; monitor real-time funding headroom; design analytical tools for investment scenarios; develop and manage the annual Core budget; lead financial audit plans; identify financial risks and mitigation opportunities; communicate financial status and strategy to internal and external stakeholders; prepare reports for the Executive Team and funders; ensure reporting and compliance with funding agencies; collaborate on communications; oversee the FRA team and standardized financial systems.
- Strategic collaboration within CARB-X : collaborate with the Executive Director, Chief of R&D, and Chief of External Affairs to develop and modify financial strategy; oversee financial aspects of new funding and grant continuations; ensure alignment with BU financial plans and BU P&L; contribute to organizational strategic planning as a member of the executive team; promote cross-functional, cohesive decision-making.
- Financial monitoring, oversight, and adjustments : determine allocation strategies to optimize pooled funding; oversee commitments, spending, and cash flow; prepare periodic sponsor financial reports and optimize award management; resolve open issues with subrecipients; coordinate with BU LAW and the COO on portfolio tools and compliance.
- Research administration : advocate for CARB-X with BU Sponsored Programs; manage financial and research administration aspects of funding cycles; oversee subrecipient actions for compliance with BU, sponsor, and federal rules; communicate and problem-solve complex issues to ensure compliant, cost-effective support services; perform due diligence of subrecipients.
- Staff development and supervision : provide leadership to the Finance & Research Administration team; define roles, goals, and development; recruit and manage staff; oversee FRA processes such as invoicing, expense compliance, budgets, and cost-share obligations; cultivate CARB-X values of excellence, integrity, humility, and collaboration.
Required Skills
