Our Gridtern Program provides current college students the ability to gain practical experience within the energy industry. Your summer will begin on Monday, June 15, 2026 , and will be filled with meaningful work experiences, professional development, networking opportunities, community involvement, and most importantly, have fun!

Available Roles
Generation Operations (Port Jefferson, NY)
Our Generation Plants supply energy to the LIPA power grid under contract, operating and maintaining a fleet of generators that meet approximately 55% of LIPA's peak demands. At the Port Jefferson Power Station, plant personnel manage two 185MW steam turbine / boiler assemblies. The team is responsible for safely performing daily demand maintenance and planning for longer-term outages at the site.
As a Gridtern for the summer, you will engage in various activities, including monitoring the Daily Heat Rate and following the Greasing and Lubrication Schedule. You will learn about and trace high-pressure steam systems and high-voltage electrical systems in the field. Additionally, you will assist in troubleshooting demand maintenance issues encountered during operations. This internship will provide you with hands-on experience in power generation and the opportunity to contribute to the efficient operation of the plant.
NGV - Power Generation - Maintenance Services Department (Island Park, NY)
Our Maintenance Services team within Power Generation at National Grid Ventures is essential in planning and executing outage work across our diverse fleet of generation assets while supporting emergent repairs. This team includes skilled professionals such as mechanics, welders, electricians, engineers and turbine specialists, who work together to ensure safe and efficient operations. By maintaining and enhancing the reliability of our power generation assets, we contribute directly to National Grid's mission of delivering dependable electricity to customers when they need it most.
As a Gridtern you will have the opportunity to participate in the planning of upcoming outage work, by participating in worklist and update meetings that cover budget, scope, schedule, and safety. You will gain valuable firsthand experience of the work done by our skilled professionals, immersing yourself in the outage process from start to finish. Additionally, you will collaborate closely with generation plant staff, as effective coordination and communication between the Maintenance Services Department and our work sites are crucial for ensuring safe and efficient operations.
NGV Generation (Northport, NY)
In National Grid Ventures Generation Department at Northport Power Station, we are responsible for the safe and reliable operation and maintenance of 4 Large Steam Turbine Generators. At the plant, we daily evaluate system performance. Perform technical investigations and administrative tasks related to power plant operation and maintenance. As well as conduct equipment tests, analyze the results and prepare recommendations for corrective actions.
As a Gridtern, you will investigate system performance problems and approach troubleshooting with an engineering mindset. You will interface with various company departments, as well as external contractors and vendors, to support plant operations and maintenance. Your responsibilities will include conducting equipment tests, analyze the results, and preparing recommendations for corrective actions. You will also oversee the work of company personnel or contractors during plant modifications, maintenance, and repairs. Additionally, you will monitor all plant operating and environmental conditions through regular inspections and reviews of operational logs. This internship will provide you with valuable experience in the energy industry and the opportunity to contribute to the reliability and efficiency of our operations.
Power Engineering Department (Hicksville, NY)
Our Power Engineering Department provides essential support to all power generating sites, including steam and gas turbine facilities, throughout Long Island. The engineering team focuses on upgrading, troubleshooting, and modifying plant equipment and auxiliary systems to maintain or enhance overall performance. Additionally, Power Engineering develops cost-benefit analyses associated with capital project upgrades to ensure financial responsibility.
As a Gridtern, you will work on a variety of mechanical and electrical projects, including steam turbine systems, gas turbine systems, and their associated auxiliary systems. You will also gain experience in the electrical engineering field, becoming involved with motors, generators, and electrical circuitry. This internship will offer you valuable firsthand experience in power engineering and the opportunity to contribute to projects that enhance the efficiency and reliability of power generation facilities.
Technical & Renewable Services (Hicksville, NY)
Our Technical & Renewable Services department supports the safe and reliable operation of power generation facilities across Long Island. The team maintains and tests critical electrical equipment, including transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, batteries, and protective relays. This team also oversees compliance programs, such as NERC testing, and provide support for renewable energy assets like battery energy storage systems. By combining hands-on fieldwork with engineering expertise, the department ensures that both traditional and renewable power systems operate efficiently and meet regulatory requirements.
As a Gridtern, you will support the maintenance and testing of power plant electrical equipment, including breakers, transformers, and protective relays. Your role includes assisting with NERC compliance activities, data collection, and routine testing under supervision. You will also participate in troubleshooting with technicians, contribute to project planning by organizing records and preparing test results, and help write procedures for standardization. Additionally, you will engage in safety initiatives by attending meetings and promoting safe work practices.
Combustion Turbine Department (Oceanside, NY)
Our Combustion Turbine Department (CTD) team operates and maintains a fleet of 42 gas turbine generating units across Long Island, NY. CTD is responsible for planning, scheduling, and performing all preventative and corrective maintenance to ensure the reliable operation of these units for our customers. Unit performance is meticulously monitored and analyzed to identify opportunities for efficiency improvements and to drive capital projects that enhance the dependability of our fleet.
As a Gridtern, you will become fully immersed in the daily operations of our sites, collaborating directly with engineers and supervisors on job planning, scheduling, technical analysis, troubleshooting, and data collection. This internship offers you the chance to experience fast-paced operational environments that blend engineering concepts and theories with practical applications. You will gain firsthand knowledge of how power is generated in a power plant and how electricity is distributed to the grid. Additionally, you will assist in reporting production statistics and conducting data analysis, utilizing your understanding of engineering disciplines to help solve real-world problems. This experience will provide you with valuable insights into the energy sector and the operations of gas turbine generating units.
LNG / CNG Planning and Design Engineering (Melville, NY)
Our Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) / Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) engineering team is responsible for the engineering, design, and technical oversight during the construction of projects for LNG and CNG assets in our New York operating territories. This includes managing equipment such as pumps, compressors, vaporizers, and instrumentation and control systems to ensure the safe and reliable operation of these facilities.
As a Gridtern, you will assist the engineering team in designing components and systems for LNG facilities, which include creating or modifying engineering drawings and performing calculations. You will also help prepare technical documentation, reports, and presentations by gathering information, organizing data, and creating visual aids. Additionally, you may support field activities such as site visits, inspections, and testing, gaining hands-on experience in LNG engineering. You will participate in team meetings and technical discussions, contributing ideas and learning from experienced engineers. Furthermore, you may assist with research and literature reviews on relevant LNG topics, summarizing findings for the engineering team.
Leak Prone Pipe Integrity Management (Melville, NY)
Our Leak Prone Pipe Integrity Management Team is responsible for identifying, evaluating, and prioritizing leak-prone distribution main segments for replacement across the gas network. This team utilizes data-driven methodologies and engineering standards, including ENG04030, to prescribe corrective actions that enhance system integrity and public safety. Their efforts directly support National Grid's mission by reducing risk, improving reliability, and ensuring the safe delivery of energy to our customers. The team collaborates closely with Design Engineering, Operations, and Planning to align replacement strategies with regulatory requirements and long-term infrastructure goals.
As a Gridtern, you will support projects focused on identifying and prioritizing leak-prone distribution mains for replacement. Your daily tasks may include analyzing asset data, applying engineering criteria from standard ENG04030, and assisting in the development of risk-based replacement strategies. You will gain exposure to GIS tools, data validation processes, and cross-functional collaboration with Engineering and Operations teams. This internship will provide you with valuable experience in gas distribution management and engineering practices.

Salary Range
$25.00-$34.00 an hour
Candidates will be assessed and provided offers based on major, degree type, and class year. Our Gridtern Program does not offer relocation, housing assistance, or public transportation reimbursement for Gridterns; however, we can provide a list of resources to utilize in making your arrangements.
Please note that as a Gridtern, you must reside within our existing footprint, which includes Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maine, Rhode Island, and Vermont. You must also reside within a reasonable, commutable distance to your assigned primary office.
