Our client, a US Fortune 250 company and a global medical technology corporation serving customers in Clinical Labs, Health care research & Pharmaceutical industry, seeks an accomplished R&D Engineer I

Job Title : R&D Engineer I

Location : Vernon Hills IL 60061

Duration : 12-month contract

Pay Rate : $32 / hr - $37.50 / hr (depending on experience)

Schedule :

Standard weekday schedule (onsite role)
No relocation assistance or visa sponsorship available

Must-Have Requirements :

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline

0–2 years of experience in R&D or process development (preferably in a medical device / FDA-regulated environment)

Demonstrated hands-on technical aptitude

Experience with validation (IQ, OQ, PQ) and writing protocols / reports

Strong oral and written communication skills

Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams

Job Description :

The R&D Engineer I will assist in developing, optimizing, and validating components and elements of medical devices. This hands-on role involves testing, process development, documentation, validation, and support across R&D, Quality, Operations, and Regulatory Affairs functions.

Responsibilities :

Design medical device components by translating design inputs into engineering specifications and drawings

Select appropriate materials, processes, and vendors to meet design needs

Build and test prototypes for engineering, pre-clinical, and clinical studies

Support process development using Design of Experiments (DOE) and statistical methods

Assist with new process equipment / tooling development, vendor selection, and negotiation

Prepare SOPs, work instructions, technical documents, and reports

Support verification and validation protocol and report preparation

Conduct laboratory testing, engineering evaluations, and competitor analyses

Develop and validate new test methods

Train and mentor technicians on design, process, and testing methods

Collaborate with Manufacturing, Quality, and Regulatory teams to ensure compliance

Participate in root cause analysis and non-conformance investigations

Minimum Qualifications :

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Biomedical, or Chemical Engineering

0–2 years of relevant industry experience

Experience in FDA / QSR or ISO-regulated environments

Preferred Qualifications :

Experience supporting validation activities

Proficiency with statistical analysis tools

Knowledge of cGMP and GLP standards

Six Sigma or Design for Six Sigma training
