Location : Hybrid - Remote within San Diego and / or Imperial County; regular in-person presence required

Scope : The Chapter & Communications Coordinator is a key full-time staff member who supports the operational, administrative, and communications functions of the San Diego Chapter. This union-represented position plays a vital role in supporting volunteer teams, maintaining internal systems, and leading public-facing communications—including management of the chapter’s flagship publication, the HiSierran .

Job activities include but are not limited to :

• Chapter Operations & Administration
• Oversee day-to-day coordination of the chapter, including email / phone communications, general administrative tasks, and event logistics.
• Maintain up-to-date records in Salesforce and ensure accurate tracking of members, donors, and volunteers
• Provide support and coordination to the Chapter Director and Chapter Chair on operational matters
• Organize mailings, prepare meeting materials, and coordinate scheduling with staff and volunteer leaders
• Volunteer Support & Engagement
• Facilitate onboarding and orientation of new volunteers
• Connect volunteers to active teams, campaigns, or committees based on their interests
• Support volunteer leadership and help maintain a welcoming, inclusive chapter culture
• Assist with chapter-wide meetings and grassroots advocacy actions
• Communications & Public Engagement
• Lead chapter communications strategy, including content creation and distribution across email, web, and social media channels
• Manage the chapter’s website and digital presence, regularly updating key pages, events, and announcements
• Draft and send member newsletters, action alerts, and updates using platforms such as Salesforce and / or Action Network
• Create compelling written, visual, and multimedia content that highlights the chapter’s advocacy, events, and volunteer opportunities
• Maintain branding and messaging consistency across platforms
• Coordinate media relations and outreach to local news outlets when needed
• HiSierran Publication Management
• Oversee all aspects of the HiSierran , the chapter’s longstanding newsletter
• Coordinate production schedules, deadlines, and volunteer contributors
• Edit and format content for publication and assist with layout / design as needed
• Manage distribution (digital and / or print), ensuring timely release to members and community partners
• Fundraising & Stewardship Support
• Support the Chapter Director in implementing fundraising appeals via email and mail
• Track and maintain donor information and acknowledgments in coordination with chapter leadership
• Assist in organizing donor appreciation activities and annual fundraising campaigns
• Hybrid role with regular in-person engagement across San Diego County, including evenings and weekends as campaign needs dictate.
• Occasional travel within California; periodic outdoor field work and community events.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary for this position is $65,000 annually.

This position is represented by a collective bargaining unit and is subject to the terms and conditions of the contract between Sierra Club and Progressive Workers Union.

This is a category 5, exempt, represented position.
