Position Summary

Alabama Public Television (APT) is seeking a dynamic and experienced News & Public Affairs Production Director to help lead our statehouse news operations and public affairs programming. Based in Montgomery, this role is central to shaping the editorial direction and production quality of APTs flagship programs like Capitol Journal, legislative coverage, and special public affairs projects produced at the Montgomery State House Production Center and Madison Avenue Studio. The ideal candidate will ensure that APTs news content consistently meets the highest journalistic and production standards while advancing the stations mission to inform, educate, and engage the citizens of Alabama. Youll work closely with the Host / Executive Producer of Montgomery News and Public Affairs, sharing responsibility for strategic decisions, personnel assignments, and content development that informs and engages the citizens of Alabama.

What Youll Do

  • Editorial Leadership : Oversee newsroom operations, set editorial direction in collaboration with the Executive Director and Capitol Journal host, assign stories, and maintain accuracy, fairness, and journalistic integrity.
  • Program Oversight : Manage the production and broadcast of Capitol Journal weekly and daily shows during legislative sessions; supervise the development and airing of quarterly programs such as Focus on Education and Higher Education Matters.
  • Special Projects : Work with the news team to create new public affairs programs and specials on key state issues (e.g., technology, economy, safety, current events).
  • Operations Management : Direct daily workflows, plan and schedule coverage, manage resources, and supervise staff performance.
  • Breaking News Response : Develop and implement protocols for live coverage of major state news events.
  • Quality Control : Ensure all broadcasts and digital content meet high editorial standards, adhere to FCC and industry regulations, and reflect APTs mission.
  • Budget & Resource Management : Oversee operational budgets, allocate staff and resources efficiently, and identify cost-saving opportunities.
  • Leadership & Collaboration : Provide clear communication, coaching, and evaluation for newsroom staff; foster collaboration across departments to maximize impact of APTs news and public affairs programming.
  • Digital Strategy : Support innovative storytelling across digital platforms, ensuring accessibility and engagement for diverse audiences.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in journalism, communications, political science, or related field (advanced degree preferred).
  • 710 years of experience in television news or public affairs, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Deep understanding of journalistic ethics, media law, and newsroom operations.
  • Strong leadership and decision-making skills under pressure.
  • Proficiency in digital news platforms, multimedia production, and content management systems.
