AgZen is tackling two of agriculture’s biggest challenges : waste and pollution.
Each year, billions are spent on pesticides and fertilizers, yet most never reach the crops - resulting in costly waste and significant environmental harm. We’re changing that. By using machine learning, computer vision, and fluid dynamics, AgZen optimizes chemical application in real time, reducing input use, minimizing pollution, and protecting both yields and ecosystems.
Founded out of MIT and backed by $13.5M in funding, our multidisciplinary team of engineers and ag science experts is redefining sustainable farming with breakthrough technology. We’re not just improving agriculture, we’re reimagining what’s possible.
About the Role
As part of the hardware team, you’ll help design, build, and maintain the user-facing applications that run on sprayers around the world, as well as designing new systems to enable further agricultural optimization. We are looking for a sharp, tenacious, and creative Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our team and lead the company’s engineering work. Responsibilities will include all product development stages from R&D to design, prototyping, testing, manufacturing, and installation. Strong communication, flexibility, teamwork, the desire to take on different responsibilities and own them will all be essential skills for a successful applicant.
📍This role is located in Somerville, MA (Boston area) with work required to be in-person.
What You’ll Do
- Collaborate with customers and internal teams to translate field needs into robust, manufacturable design objectives - especially for modular, ruggedized hardware that must perform in harsh agricultural environments.
- Build and test mechanical prototypes to validate fit, function, and assembly processes, and to troubleshoot integration with folding or moving equipment.
- Engage in projects through all stages (R&D, prototyping, testing, manufacturing, installation, and on field use) by defining requirements, specifying parts, and owning designs at the subsystem level.
- Engineer solutions that enable our systems to integrate seamlessly with a diverse array of commercial sprayers and agricultural machinery, addressing the unique challenges of retrofitting in the field.
- Design enclosures for sensitive electronics, with a focus on modularity and ease of servicing - ensuring components can be quickly swapped or repaired in the field to minimize downtime.
- Address complex issues such as waterproofing, condensation management, and lens cleaning, iterating designs based on real-world field failures and continuous customer feedback.
- Develop and improve manufacturing processes, create detailed field installation plans, and work closely with manufacturing partners to scale production efficiently.
- Collaborate across mechanical, electrical, and software teams to deliver on project timelines and defined deliverables (OKRs, scheduling, time tracking).
