Position Overview

Starting Salary Range is $45,219.20 - $47,525. The initial salary offer is commensurate with education and related work experience.

Reporting to the Manager, Emergency and Safety Operations (MESO), the Safety Specialist assists in implementing and managing all emergency planning and safety operations for the College. Responsibilities include college-wide emergency preparedness initiatives, incident response, and emergency communications.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist the MESO with preparedness, prevention, response, recovery, and mitigation efforts, including developing emergency plans, policies, procedures, and guidance.
  • Support the development and implementation of environmental, health, safety, and risk management programs and initiatives that promote the safety of the College community.
  • Lead the Building Emergency Coordinator (BEC) program and guide BECs in developing their Building Emergency Response Plans (BERPs).
  • Develop, schedule, and conduct BEC program safety training sessions and drills in each campus building to prepare students, faculty, and staff for emergencies.
  • Plan, coordinate, and lead training for the Campus Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program.
  • Facilitate BEC and CERT drill evaluations ("hotwashes"), develop After Action Reports (AARs) and Improvement Plans (IPs), and track completion of improvement actions.
  • Prepare detailed reports and maintain accurate records of BEC and CERT planning, training, and drills.
  • Inventory, inspect, and maintain safety and emergency management equipment, including signage, communications devices, fire extinguishers, first aid cabinets, AEDs, Narcan kits, Bleed Control kits, and evacuation chairs.
  • Assist with campus safety inspections, assessments, and audits.
  • Analyze safety data to identify trends and recommend improvements.
  • Assist with the implementation of the Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) program by coordinating with college departments to develop, test, and maintain plans.
  • Assist with the National Incident Management System (NIMS) / Incident Management System (ICS) training for key personnel.
  • Assist with the development of Incident Action Plans (IAPs) and staff the Command Post (CP) or Emergency Operations Center (EOC) for commencement ceremonies and other large College events.
  • Respond to incidents and disasters and assist the College's Incident Commander (IC) in the CP or EOC.
  • Serve on the College's Safety Committee and assist with meeting notes and documentation.
  • Review and edit emergency plans and related documents.
  • Attend external safety and emergency management partner meetings; document and track notes and action items.
  • Participate in educational and outreach activities, including lectures and workshops.

Additional Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform other duties and manage special projects as assigned.
  • Must be available to work evenings, early mornings, weekends, and during emergencies.
  • Minimum Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Associate's (or higher) degree or sixty (60) hours of college coursework in safety or a related field.
  • Two (2) years of related safety or emergency work experience.
  • Environmental, Health, Safety, and Risk Management experience preferred.
  • Successful completion of FEMA IS-100, IS-200, IS-700, IS-800, IS-2200, ICS-300, and ICS-400 courses preferred.
  • Instructor certification in First Aid, AED, and CPR preferred.
  • Train-the-Trainer certifications in Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) preferred.
  • Homeland Security Exercise and Evaluation Program (HSEEP) certification preferred.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations and guidelines related to emergency management and disaster assistance.
  • Understanding of emergency management principles, procedures, and standards (higher education experience preferred).
  • Competencies needed :

  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and time management skills, and
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
