Overview

Sutter Health’s Greater Silicon Valley (GSV) Division is seeking a dynamic and visionary executive to serve as Vice President of Strategy and Business Development. This leader will be responsible for shaping and driving the Division’s strategic direction, identifying growth opportunities, and fostering innovation across a complex and rapidly evolving healthcare landscape. With annual revenue exceeding $4.5 billion, GSV plays a critical role in advancing Sutter Health’s mission across the region. Sutter Health has committed $1 billion in capital investments aimed at significantly enhancing access, quality, and innovation in healthcare delivery throughout the Greater Silicon Valley area.

The Vice President (VP), Strategy is accountable for the overall strategic growth objectives of the Silicon Valley Division. The VP, Strategy develops and sets geographic division strategic direction and cascades enterprise system strategy, in partnership with the Divisional Leadership Team. The VP leads growth, delivery system and physician development initiatives related to growth-oriented strategic initiatives, service line planning and business development, physician network development and strategy, and strategic partnerships within the Silicon Valley Division. The VP monitors patient and community access to care and develops growth plans in keeping with the needs of patients served by the Division, in partnership with medical groups, clinical operational teams, and leadership. The VP also cascades system strategic priorities and positions Sutter Health assets to support patient care and wellness in the community, and integrates systemwide clinical service lines to ensure patients receive the best care in the right location and by the right team.

The VP, Strategy provides mentoring and oversight to assigned staff to ensure effective management of projects and achievement of results. Engagement deliverables should lead to practical, significant, and measurable improvements in quality, service and efficiency and drive the growth agenda to serve more patients. The VP also builds collaborative relationships with Division and system leaders, management, physician leaders, and project resources including consultants, contractors, and vendors. The VP reports to the SVP, Chief Strategy & Growth Officer and serves on the Division Leadership Team. The VP supports the Operating Unit Board and related committees, presenting strategy / growth updates for Board approvals.

Responsibilities

  • Drive the Division’s strategic direction and growth initiatives aligned with Enterprise Strategy and One Sutter objectives.
  • Lead growth-related programs, service line planning, business development, physician network development, and strategic partnerships within the Silicon Valley Division.
  • Develop growth plans addressing patient access and care delivery in partnership with medical groups, clinical operations, and leadership.
  • Cascade system priorities and position division assets to support patient care and health / wellness in the community.
  • Mentor and oversee assigned staff; deliver practical, measurable improvements in quality, service, and efficiency.
  • Collaborate with Division and system leaders, physician leaders, and consultants / vendors to complete care delivery network gaps.
  • Represent the Division on strategy / growth matters to the Operating Unit Board and sub-committees as needed.

Education

  • Master’s degree in health administration, Business or Public Administration – Required; or equivalent education / experience.
  • Experience

  • 12+ years’ experience in a complex managed healthcare environment.
  • Consulting experience.
  • Senior-level healthcare management experience with demonstrated leadership in strategic planning, financial planning and analysis, program development, and physician development.
  • Experience in project management, facilitation of planning sessions with senior leaders, and management / leadership of teams.
  • Experience engaging and working in a team environment; proven ability to lead large-scale initiatives and change initiatives.
  • Experience supervising / managing effective teams.
  • Skills And Knowledge

  • Knowledge of health care operations / delivery, project management, and quality improvement.
  • Knowledge of the Northern California healthcare industry, particularly Sutter Health, preferred.
  • Strong communication, facilitation, and interpersonal skills; proficiency with quantitative / statistical analysis and decision support.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and lead diverse teams; strong organizational and prioritization skills.
  • Customer service orientation; ability to influence and persuade senior leaders.
  • Advanced computer skills (spreadsheets, word processing, databases, presentations).
  • Adaptability to rapidly changing environments and ability to develop actionable recommendations for senior leaders.
  • Clinical and / or operational project management experience is strongly desired.

    Pay Range is $173.68 to $234.98 / hour. The salary range for this role may vary above or below the posted range as determined by location. This range has not been adjusted for any geographic differential. Compensation takes into account factors including but not limited to experience, education, skills, licensure and certifications, department equity, training and organizational needs. Base pay is part of the total rewards program offered by Sutter Health. Eligible roles also qualify for a comprehensive benefits package.
