Description : Job Summary

The Staff Accountant supports Mate’s financial operations through accurate and timely accounting practices. This position is responsible for recording journal entries, preparing account reconciliations, and conducting credit reviews for new and existing customers. The Staff Accountant plays an important role in maintaining financial integrity and ensuring Mate continues to Respect, Support, and Inspire metalworking professionals through operational excellence and fiscal responsibility.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

General Accounting

  • Assist with the month-end close process, including preparation, analysis, and posting of journal entries.
  • Prepare and reconcile general ledger accounts to ensure accuracy and compliance with company policies.
  • Manage fixed asset accounting using the company’s established software system.
  • Record and analyze payroll data for accuracy and consistency.
  • Compute sales commissions payable based on established procedures.
  • Cross-train to provide backup support for the Accounting Manager and other roles within the department.

Credit & Collections Management

  • Receive and review new customer account applications submitted by Customer Service or Sales.
  • Evaluate the creditworthiness of prospective and existing customers using external credit reports, customer references, and internal criteria.
  • Approve or deny credit within predetermined standards and assign appropriate credit / order codes.
  • Review orders flagged as “Subject to Accounting Review,” determine release or hold status, and notify customers accordingly.
  • Monitor open accounts for potential collection issues and revise credit decisions following established guidelines.
  • Make professional collection calls to customers with past-due balances; document communications and schedule appropriate follow-ups.
  • Maintain accurate records of customer financial status and collection activity.
  • Consult with the Accounting Manager on accounts requiring escalation or referral to external collection agencies.
  • Process and file correspondence related to bankruptcies; prepare and submit proofs of claim as needed.
  • Grant extensions of credit when appropriate and update customer records accordingly.
  • Enter and maintain accurate customer address changes, credit approvals, and extensions in the accounting system.

    Qualifications :

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting required.
  • Demonstrated high degree of organization, attention to detail, and analytical ability.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, and Outlook).
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles and ability to calculate figures such as discounts, interest, commissions, and percentages.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

    What You’ll Do
