The Center for Blood Disorders at Augusta University (AU), a part of the Georgia Cancer Center and the Medical College of Georgia, (Division of Hematology / Oncology in the Department of Medicine) invites applications for a faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor. Individuals with a specific interest in benign hematology are requested to apply. Board certification in Internal Medicine and Hematology is required. The desired candidate will participate in patient care, teaching, and research and is expected to work collaboratively and develop and participate in clinical trials. The Center for Blood Disorders is involved in patient care and research for adult patients with inherited blood disorders including sickle cell disease, hemophilia and other bleeding disorders, and thrombosis. The Center has a well-funded infrastructure, which includes a clinical care team and a clinical research program, as well as an in-house laboratory that specializes in molecular diagnostics of blood disorders, including hemoglobinopathies, myeloproliferative neoplasms, and bleeding disorders. The AU Center for Blood Disorders has been involved in a large number of NIH- and industry-funded clinical trials and has been successful in maintaining long-term, uninterrupted extramural funding.

The Augusta University (AU) Hematology / Oncology division is well-rounded, with programs and expertise in benign hematology, solid tumor oncology, hematological malignancies, BMT, and a fellowship training program. AU is also home to the Institute of Molecular Medicine and Genetics, the Center for Genomic Medicine and Biotechnology, the Vascular Biology Center, and the Immunotherapy Center, all of which provide opportunities for collaborative work. A competitive salary is offered commensurate with experience and includes an incentive plan that rewards clinical productivity and / or research funding success.

This position is not considered to be on tenure track.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will collaborate with clinical investigators in developing a state-of-the-art research program as well as basic science investigators. The medical oncology programs are well-rounded in solid tumor oncology, benign hematology, hematological malignancies, BMT, and a fellowship training program. The duties include, but are not limited to :

Teaching / Instruction :

  • Give didactic lectures to the Hematology / Oncology, Internal Medicine residents and medical students.
  • Teach residents / fellows in the outpatient clinic setting.
  • Participate actively in the teaching activities in the Department of Medicine including mentoring and advising medical students, residents and fellows in scheduled conferences.
  • Participate in the Department of Medicine, Cancer Service Line, Cancer Center educational conferences and activities.

Research :

  • Participate in state-of-the-art Phase II / III clinical trials
  • Develop and serve as principal investigator for investigator-initiated clinical trials in benign hematology and related cancers.
  • Collect and analyze data and present at national conferences.
  • Develop nationally and internationally recognized scholarly activities including original scientific reports in high impact peer reviewed publications.
  • Work closely with your Co-Leaders, with clinical and basic scientists and other Investigators in developing clinical trials that will lead to new discoveries in a robust clinical research portfolio for the Department of Medicine and Georgia Cancer Center.
  • Further metrics of clinical and research success will jointly be developed with the leadership or his designee on a yearly basis.
  • Patient Care (Clinical) :

  • Provide benign hematology care in the Center for Blood Disorders and other cancers in the Cancer Service Line.
  • Provide 6 to 8 weeks of in-patient service and 4 to 5 half days out-patient clinic per week, which could include GCC, ASMP and outreach.
  • Participate in the care of benign hematology patients and growth of the hematology clinical and research aspects of the program.
  • Participate in clinical outreach activities outside of Augusta and cover other practice sites as required by the division. You will be expected to participate in marketing, which may include short trips to meet with referring physicians, groups or hospitals.
  • Provide clinical supervision and consultation to hematology / oncology fellows, internal medicine residents and medical students.
  • Clinical productivity will be measured by wRVUs. The institution uses the 65th percentile Clinical Practice Solutions Center (CPSC) benchmark. Your assigned clinical FTE would yield an adjusted benchmark. You would be expected to reach 75% of that adjusted benchmark in year one and 100% in year two. enerate 3,403 work RVUs for hematology / oncology faculty as reported by the Faculty Practice Solution Center and adjusted for your assigned clinical effort after the first full year of employment. You are expected to generate 4,537 work RVUs after the second year.
  • Work closely with your Co-Leaders, with clinical and basic scientists and other Investigators in developing. Clinical trials that will lead to new discoveries in a robust clinical research portfolio for the Cancer Center.
  • Serve on the Department of Medicine and Cancer Center scientific and operational committees, as requested.
  • Maintain appropriate professional memberships that are pertinent to hematology / oncology (ASH, ASCO and GASCO) and presentation at medical oncology meetings.
  • Required Qualifications

    MD, DO or equivalent degree from an accredited institution. Candidates should be board-eligible in Medicine-Hematology / Oncology. Completed three-year residency in Internal Medicine. The final candidate will be required to provide proof of completed academic degree in the form of original transcript. Must have excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal and people management skills.

    Assistant Professor - Early level career as a faculty member with appropriate post graduate training.

    Associate Professor - Mid level career faculty member with at least five years at rank of Assistant Professor or comparable training, background, and experience.

    Professor - Senior level career faculty member with at least five years at the rank of Associate Professor or comparable training, background, and experience.

    Required faculty employment qualifications for all USG institutions and all academic ranks within these institutions shall be :

  • Consistent with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)'s requirements for institutional accreditation;
  • Evidence of ability as a teacher;
  • Evidence of activity as a scholar and ability in all other duties assigned;
  • Successful experience (which will necessarily be waived for those just entering the academic profession who meet all other requirements); and,
  • Desirable personal qualities judged on the basis of personal interview, complete biographical data, and recommendations.

    This position is fiscal year based and works year-round.

    The intended work commitment or full-time equivalent (FTE) for this position is 1.0 and considered full-time.

    Assistant Professor - Salary and compensation is commensurate with education, experience, and achievements. The salary is subject to availability of funds.
