Community Correctional Officers

Community Correctional Officers provide supervision, rehabilitation, and support services to offenders under the supervision of the Probation and Parole Division of the Vermont Department of Corrections. They utilize both risk control and risk management services as part of a supervision team of high-risk offenders. Work is performed in accordance with correctional policies, directives, and procedures under the supervision of an administrative superior. There are two positions available, first shift 8 : 00am-4 : 30pm and second shift is 2 : 00pm-10 : 30pm. The applicant must have a strong understanding of ethics and boundaries and :

• The ability to communicate and be able to work in a team setting
• Excellent writing / strong computer skills
• Good time management, and observation / organizational skills
• Be detail oriented.
• Have understanding of victim awareness
• Have knowledge of domestic violence and sexual offenders
• The ability to communicate effectively to a team the dynamics observed during field contacts
• The ability to maintain a professional rapport with local law-enforcement agencies and community partners

Prior Corrections, law-enforcement, or military experience preferred. All employees of the Agency of Human Services perform their respective functions adhering to four key practices : customer service, holistic service, strengths-based relationships and results orientation.

Environmental Factors : Duties are performed in the homes, places of employment, and other locations frequented by assigned inmates as well as in a standard office setting. Duties include working closely with local police departments in arrest situations or in the performance of field supervision check. High stress situations are predictable, even frequent. The potential of physical assault or injury is present. A valid motor vehicle operators license is required. Overtime and emergency duty are predictable. Shift assignments may change in accordance with the needs of the office, including any of three shifts and weekend assignments as well potentially working within a correctional facility.

Minimum Qualifications : Bachelors degree in criminal justice, social service or a related human services field OR Associates degree AND one (1) year or more of experience in corrections, human services, military service, law enforcement or other related field. OR High School diploma or equivalent AND two (2) years or more of experience in corrections, human services, military service, law enforcement or other related field. Note : A valid motor vehicle operators license is required.

Special Requirements : Candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position. In accordance with AHS Policy 4.02, Hiring Standards, Vermont and / or national criminal record checks, as well as DMV and adult and child abuse registry checks, as appropriate to the position under recruitment, will be conducted on candidates, with the exception of those who are current classified state employees seeking transfer, promotion or demotion into an AHS classified position or are persons exercising re-employment (RIF) rights.

Conviction History Requirements : Candidates who have any felony conviction record or who, within the past five (5) years, have been placed under supervision or sanctioned for a misdemeanor conviction must receive a waiver from the Commissioner of Corrections in order to be considered for employment.
