Job Title : Emergency Department Registered Nurse Profession : Registered Nurse Specialty : Acute Care Duration : 15 weeks Shift : No guaranteed holiday rotation, Day / Night / Weekend / Holiday Hours per Shift : 3 x 12-hour shifts 2 On Call shifts per 4 weeks Experience : Two years acute hospital experience as a registered nurse, with at least one year in an emergency department setting License : State RN Licensure Certifications : BLS, ACLS, PALS, Stroke Certification (must be AHA or RQI) Must-Have : - Two years of experience serving as a registered nurse - At least one year of experience in an emergency department environment Description : The Emergency Department Registered Nurse applies knowledge of nursing theory, technical skills, and communication skills in delivering high-quality compassionate care to patients and families. The ED RN assesses patient needs, identifies the urgent or emergent care priority, and collaboratively provides direct care. The RN applies appropriate interventions and evaluates patient progress. The ED RN demonstrates skill in the use of various invasive and non-invasive procedures, treatments, and therapeutic interventions appropriate for managing life-threatening and routine emergency situations. The ED RN utilizes principles of relationship-based care to alleviate anxiety, provide information, and address pain, discomfort, and safety concerns. He / she assesses the physiological, psychosocial, emotional, and cultural needs of patients of all age groups and their families. The RN connects with patients and families during triage and identifies the initial management of patients of all age groups. The RN assigns priority of care in accordance with triage standards. The RN establishes rapport with patients and families, addresses comfort needs, listens carefully, assesses nonverbal communication, and provides frequent updates. The ED RN conveys and gathers information concisely and accurately. The RN conducts a primary assessment of critical need and detects and documents any major deviation from the norm for all age groups within acceptable time frames. The RN correctly identifies the necessary steps and interventions required. The RN uses direct observation, patient / family interview, EMS report, and data to conduct a secondary assessment. The ED RN identifies contributing factors, health history, events, or activities preceding the emergent health event. The RN reassesses the patient to identify responses to treatment and / or changes in condition and responds appropriately. The RN encourages and builds mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members to accomplish the best possible patient outcomes. The RN teaches others as appropriate and delegates tasks and interventions consistent with individual education, training, and scope of practice. The RN understands the personal responsibility to safeguard public safety through compliance with infection prevention strategies. The RN prepares patients and families for diagnostic procedures and treatments while making appropriate referrals for post-emergency care. The RN teaches patients what is necessary for continued care and healing at home. The RN assesses patient / family learning styles and structures educational sessions to maximize understanding. The RN asks questions to evaluate retention of key points in education and discharge instructions. The RN seeks to understand what is most important to the patients and families, acknowledging that they are the central focus of all care and services. The RN embraces the importance of creating a healing environment as a key element of professional nursing practice. The RN keeps patients and significant others informed of the process of care, anticipates their needs, and maintains awareness of the patient's condition throughout the emergency department visit. The RN updates patient communication boards throughout the stay.
