Role Summary :
The Fuel Handling Supervisor will oversee the day-to-day operations of coal handling at the plant. This position is primarily focused on managing and supervising the offloading of coal from railcars, storing it in coal piles, and ensuring that the plant is consistently supplied with the appropriate fuel for operations. The role requires supervising unionized employees, scheduling, and ensuring that safety standards are followed. It is a less technical role compared to the Production Supervisor but still requires leadership, problem-solving, and experience in a heavy industrial setting.
Key Responsibilities :
- Oversee coal handling operations including the unloading of coal from trains, stacking coal in designated piles, and transferring fuel directly to the plant for combustion.
- Supervise union employees working in the field, operating heavy equipment such as dozers and railcar dumpers .
- Manage coal yard operations and ensure coal is stored, moved, and distributed efficiently.
- Coordinate with plant operations to manage fuel supply and make necessary adjustments to the fuel handling process as required.
- Ensure safety by overseeing the coal yard and rail yard operations and enforcing plant safety standards.
- Schedule and assign work to unionized employees, ensuring that fuel handling tasks are carried out according to plant needs and safety guidelines.
- Respond to any fuel-related issues that may arise, ensuring that plant operations continue without disruption.
- Supervise the transport of ash from the coal combustion process to the designated ash landfill across the street from the plant.
- Handle the administrative aspects of the role, including scheduling, reporting, and coordinating with other departments (such as plant operations and maintenance).
Required Experience & Skills :
Experience with heavy equipment is a must—specifically with coal handling equipment like dozers, railcar dumpers, and other machinery used in yard management.Background in heavy industrial environments (e.g., quarries, sand pits, or similar industrial settings) is highly preferred.Experience in yard management or logistics is beneficial.Supervisory experience in a unionized environment is highly preferred, but not mandatory.Ability to manage and direct a team of unionized workers and handle any challenges that may arise in the field.Problem-solving skills to handle issues related to coal delivery, storage, or distribution.Knowledge of health and safety standards related to industrial operations.Education Requirements :
Flexible educational requirements :High school diploma, Associate’s degree, or equivalent experience will be considered.
Specialized training or certifications in industrial operations or equipment handling is a plus.Shift & Work Schedule :
This position is primarily outdoor and involves supervising work in coal yards and rail yards .Regular work will involve overtime and possibly on-call duties to cover absenteeism or ensure smooth operations across shifts.The role may require working during weekends , and there is some potential for on-call duties , though not as frequent as other plant roles.Standard work hours are Monday through Friday , with the possibility of weekend overtime if necessary.Physical Demands :
The job requires physical activity in an outdoor environment, including walking across the yard, inspecting operations, and ensuring safety compliance.Must be capable of handling the physical demands of working in a heavy industrial setting, including exposure to the elements, dust, and heavy machinery.
