The Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) is the state of Florida’s social services agency. The agency oversees services for child safety, fostering, adoption, domestic violence, adult protective services, refugees, homelessness, mental health, substance abuse, childcare providers, human trafficking and public assistance. Within DCF, theSubstance Abuse and Mental Health (SAMH) Programoffice is recognized as the single state authority for substance abuse and mental health services. The Office of SAMH is statutorily responsible for the planning, evaluation, and implementation of a comprehensive statewide system of care for the prevention, treatment, and recovery of children and adults with serious mental illnesses or substance use disorders.

North Florida Evaluation and Treatment Center (NFETC)is a 216 bed, all male, forensic, mental health rehabilitation facility. The Center is located in northeast Gainesville, Florida on 639 picturesque acres with regular sightings of deer, turkey and other wildlife. NFETC employs a variety of entry level to leadership positions including food service, maintenance, direct care, nurses, counselors, rehab therapists, medical doctors, security, psychiatrists, and psychologists.

This is a highly responsible and professional position serving as the Senior Human Services Program Spec OPS within the Admissions & Discharge Unit.The ideal candidate will be a collaborative team player who works seamlessly across all sections within the program office. This role requires the use of independent judgment, a proactive approach to responsibilities, and exceptional attention to detail. Specific Duties and Responsibilities include :

Assist individuals with orientation and adjustment upon admission to North Florida Evaluation &Treatment Center.

Assist persons in the development of their own plans of growth and development i.e. utilizing the Wellness Recovery Action Planning (WRAP).

Provide individual support by listening and also sharing personal lived experiences when appropriate.

Provide recovery education and support to individuals throughout their recovery and goal-oriented journeys.

Actively identify and support linkages to community resources and trainings : educational, vocational, social, cultural, mutual self-help groups, etc., that supports the persons chosen goals and interests

Maintain contact by phone and / or in person with individuals released to less restrictive environment like a civil hospital or community setting to provide intentional support services if or as needed.

Assist individuals served and their families in identifying their needs and communicate those needs to the program director.

Provide written referrals for additional services as needed to assist individuals in meeting their established goals.

Assist individuals served to develop problem-solving skills so that they can respond to challenges that may arise in their recovery process.

Encourage individuals served to regularly attend and actively participate in groups offered through the Therapeutic Activities Program (TAP).

Promote the development of self-efficacy through role-modeling strength-based recovery.

Assist individuals in discovering their self-worth through successful experiences, so they can find meaning, purpose and social connections in their own lives.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required for the position :

Knowledge of social, economic, rehabilitation or health care service objectives.

Knowledge of methods of compiling, organizing and analyzing data.

Ability to develop manuals, policies, procedures, standards and rules.

Ability to develop methods for monitoring and evaluating quality of service and compliance with rules, policies and statutes.

Ability to review and evaluate plans and programs.

Ability to identify improvements and adjustments needed to insure program effectiveness and efficiency.

Ability to establish and maintain liaison with other agencies.

Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.

Ability to communicate effectively.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Minimum Qualifications :

High school diploma or equivalent.

One year experience working professionally, such as volunteering, in a mental health setting, as an advocate or non-certified peer specialist.

Willing to obtain National Certified Peer Specialist (NCPS) or Certified Recovery Peer Specialist (CRPS) certification through the Florida Certification Board within one year of employment. Applicants are expected to understand the certification requirements.

Preference will be given to applicants who have :

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in health, social, economic, or rehabilitative programs, health care or hospital administration or planning.
