The Director, Outreach and Engagement, Protect One Health in Ohio (OHIO) determines objectives and implements the operational strategy for the outreach and engagement components of the initiative. This initiative is highly-visible to the Ohio Governor’s Office and Legislature and has long-term implications for the College of Veterinary Medicine. In this role, the Director develops and coordinates complex, cross-functional engagement and educational programs across the College that are aimed at increasing the number of veterinary

students originating from rural Ohio, increasing the number of veterinary students who pursue large animal veterinary medicine positions; and incentivizing these newly minted veterinarians to return to and remain in veterinary practices in rural Ohio.

The Outreach and Engagment Director is the principle liaison for the Protect OHIO with agricultural stakeholders and rural communities. They leverage their expertise in veterinary medicine and their extensive relationships with stakeholders to identify opportunities and implement outreach, recruitment, and education events with future veterinary students in rural Ohio. They liaise with large animal veterinarians throughout Ohio to provide shadowing and internships / externships for students who are interested in a career in veterinary medicine. They identify geographic areas that are underserved with regard to veterinary care and work with State and Federal governmental agencies, local school systems, and local government / community organizations to develop and pilot novel solutions to attract and retain veterinarians to these locations. Given the complex, cross-functional scope of Protect OHIO, the Director facilitates broad dialogue with executives, senior leaders, faculty, and staff across

teams and departments within the College of Veterinary Medicine. This engagement helps to ensure that multiple perspectives, goals, and even resource limitations are considered when implementing Protect OHIO. The Director influences others to accept new practices, concepts, and approaches with multiple levels of stakeholders.

The Director has broad knowledge and expertise in veterinary medicine with a focus on population medicine in food animals and / or equine. They are familiar with common agricultural practices in Ohio across a variety of livestock and poultry species and can help interested students identify opportunities to gain hands-on experience with these animals. They understand the requirements necessary for admission to veterinary school and can guide interested students to meet these requirements. They understand the diversity of roles and professional opportunities for veterinarians in rural large animal practices and can help prepare interested students for success in these practice environments. The Director develops objectives, translates them into operational plans, and drives execution to achieve Protect OHIO’s long-term goals. They address challenges to ensure program delivery and their decisions have serious impact on overall success or failure of the initiative. In addition, they have experience in leading a team, project, or program and supervising employees.
