Job Summary

The Director of Cybersecurity Engineering and Operations leads the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of the organization's security, engineering processes, and day-to-day security operations. This senior leader partners closely with IT, risk, governance, fraud, and other teams to protect critical assets, ensure regulatory compliance, and enable secure, resilient business growth. The role demands deep technical expertise, strong leadership, and a strategic mindset to translate emerging threats into actionable defenses across the enterprise.

To be effective, an individual must be able to perform each job duty successfully.

  • Oversee the design, deployment, and maintenance of security technologies (firewalls, SIEM, EDR, cloud security, identity management, etc.).
  • Develop and implement cybersecurity strategies, policies, and standards aligned with organizational goals and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with IT, Risk, Audit, and Governance teams to ensure security is embedded in all technology initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards (e.g., NIST CSF 2.0, ISO 27001) and other regulatory frameworks.
  • Develop & mentor Cybersecurity leaders who have teams of individual contributors & Principal level resources reporting to them.
  • Collaborate with the security architecture team on reviews and risk assessments for new and existing systems.
  • Develop and maintain cybersecurity metrics and reporting for executive leadership.
  • Manage security operations, engineering budgets and resource allocation.
  • Participate in post-incident reviews and ensure continuous improvement of security posture.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of emerging threats, vulnerabilities, and security technologies.
  • Direct penetration tests and their remediation.
  • Direct vulnerability management.
  • Support business initiatives with security engineering expertise and operational guidance.
  • Participate in strategic planning and roadmap development for cybersecurity.
  • Foster a culture of urgency, accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement within the cybersecurity organization.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES

Education & Experience

  • Minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in cybersecurity, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role overseeing cybersecurity engineering and operations teams, including direct leadership of other managers.
  • Proven track record of leading large-scale security initiatives, managing cross-functional teams, and driving operational excellence in complex enterprise environments.
  • Bachelor's degree in Cybersecurity, Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related field; equivalent experience considered.
  • Master's degree in Cybersecurity, Business Administration, or a related discipline preferred.
  • Licenses & Certifications

  • Industry-recognized certifications such as CISSP, CISM, CISA, or equivalent are preferred.
  • Additional certifications such as CCSP, GCIH, GCIA, OSCP, or CRISC are highly valued and demonstrate depth in specialized areas of cybersecurity.
  • Knowledge & Skills

    Cybersecurity Expertise

  • Deep subject matter expertise in cybersecurity engineering, security operations, and incident response, with a strong understanding of enterprise security architecture and operational risk management.
  • Proven ability to align cybersecurity strategy with evolving threat landscapes, regulatory requirements, and business objectives.
  • Hands-on experience with a wide range of security technologies including SIEM, EDR, firewalls, cloud security, IAM, and vulnerability management platforms.

  • Leads with vision and accountability, creating a culture of urgency, ownership, and high performance.
  • Coaches and develops leaders and managers, fostering talent mobility and succession planning across the cybersecurity function.
  • Builds and sustains high-performing, cross-functional teams that deliver results aligned with business priorities.

  • Oversees high-risk, complex cybersecurity functions with enterprise-wide impact.
  • Directs multiple interrelated teams and functions, operating with autonomy while remaining accountable to business unit leadership.
  • Owns budget planning and resource allocation for cybersecurity engineering and operations.
  • Co-develops strategic plans with executive leadership, setting objectives and adapting strategies to dynamic threat and business conditions.
  • Strategic planning with active participation in broader business unit planning and execution.
  • Analytical Thinking & Problem Solving

  • Applies enterprise-level financial and risk perspectives to cybersecurity decision-making.
  • Uses a combination of expert-level data analysis, intuition, and experience to solve complex security challenges.
  • Leads the resolution of high-impact security incidents and systemic operational issues.
  • Implements cybersecurity solutions balancing innovation with operational feasibility.
  • Communication & Influence

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to translate complex cybersecurity concepts into actionable insights for executive level audiences.
  • Skilled in public speaking, executive briefings, and cross-functional collaboration to drive alignment and influence outcomes.
