Job description

Overview

This is a full-time, 40 hours per week, phlebotomy position located at a client site in Glenview. Must be able to work Monday through Friday 9am - 5 : 30pm.

Responsibilities

  • Performs phlebotomy and other lab specimen collections per age related standards and in accordance with departmental policies, protocols and procedures.
  • Demonstrates AIDET model and optimizes patient safety to reduce the likelihood of medical / health care errors.
  • Receives and reviews physician orders; ensures that all necessary information is included for appropriate lab services. Enters accurate orders for lab tests in accordance with department policies, protocols and procedures.
  • Provides post-phlebotomy patient care and maintains effective patient communication.
  • Processes specimens in a timely manner to ensure stability and integrity of samples including labeling, centrifuging, aliquoting, freezing and packaging for transport in accordance with established protocols and policies.
  • Reviews refrigerator temperatures and QC / QA records; reports findings to supervisor or manager as appropriate.
  • Operates and maintains equipment pertinent to the job; follows up on outstanding orders and communicates results as appropriate.
  • Maintains a safe work environment and adheres to biohazard waste procedures.
  • Performs lab-related clerical duties including order entry, verification of test result receipt, patient information retrieval, and use of medical record systems; assists with inventory and equipment sanitation.
  • Uses resources efficiently and participates in efforts to reduce costs and streamline processes.
  • Adheres to continuing education expectations and completes competency assessments.
  • Demonstrates teamwork and professional conduct; applies critical thinking and sound judgment to resolve situations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required :

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Phlebotomy certification through a nationally recognized organization or training from a phlebotomy school or medical institution, or one or more years of phlebotomy experience in a healthcare setting, or CMA certification.
  • Preferred :

  • Experience performing phlebotomy on a broad range of patient types.
  • Experience with processing lab specimens, transferring specimens, and handling a centrifuge.
  • Familiar with medical EMR systems; knowledge of medical terminology.
