Summary :

The HLA Technologist functions as testing personnel in the histocompatibility laboratory. The HLA Technologist performs routine and STAT testing in support of living and deceased organ transplantation, platelet refractoriness, and HLA testing for other purposes, within the ASHI-accredited laboratory. Testing personnel also rotate on-call duties with other laboratory members, to communicate outside of business hours with the Laboratory Director for virtual crossmatches, and perform crossmatching on site for deceased organ transplantation.

CHT(ACHI) or Medical Laboratory Scientist credentialing is strongly preferred. Candidates not currently certified, but eligible for certification, will be supported by the Laboratory Director to obtain credentialing, to become certified within 18 months of hire.

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Education : Knowledge of clinical laboratory procedures, practices, and theory required through a Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology or related field required.
  • License / Certifications : Current ACHI certification as a Histocompatibility Technologist preferred.
  • Experience : One year of training in human histocompatibility testing, meeting ASHI Standards to include serologic and molecular HLA typing, HLA antibody screening, CDC and Flow Cytometric Analysis, crossmatching, and ABO blood grouping required.

Responsibilities

  • Verifies that only properly identified and acceptable patient's specimens are analyzed.
  • Prepares, transports, and / or stores specimens using established procedures to ensure specimen integrity.
  • Correlates test results with patient's condition, detecting and reporting significant changes, ambiguous results, abnormal results, and / or incompatibilities to the Laboratory Director.
  • Reviews and enters patient and control results for Laboratory Director review.
  • Provides prompt notification and documentation of any critical test results or failed quality control measures according to department protocol.
  • Conducts established quality control procedures on analytical tests, equipment, reagents, media, and products, evaluating results and implementing and documenting corrective action when indicated.
  • Operates, calibrates, conducts performance checks, and maintains assigned clinical laboratory equipment or instruments, documenting any corrective action needed.
  • Prepares reagents or media, including necessary computations, from prescribed procedures.
  • Serves as an information resource for Renal Fellows and new and / or less skilled HLA laboratory personnel, providing training as requested by Laboratory Director.
  • Assists with establishing and maintaining supply inventories. Ensures that adequate, daily supplies are available in all assigned areas of responsibility.
