CODART is hiring : Editor in Minneapolis

The Master Drawings Association seeks an Editor to lead the publication of the academic journal Master Drawings . Founded in 1963, Master Drawings is the leading international periodical for the study of drawings from the fourteenth century to the present day in Europe and the Americas.

The journal’s issues are printed at a facility in New Jersey in January, April, July, and November, and made accessible to subscribers online shortly thereafter. The journal’s website also includes a Digital Resources page where content beyond the scope of a print publication (for example, checklists, catalogues, and archival documents) can be published to accompany and amplify articles, ensuring free and easy access to essential research.

The Editor will take a leading role at an exciting time for the journal, which has entered its seventh decade of publication. Along with contributions by a robust, international group of academics, curators, and conservators, the journal has in recent years attracted an exceptional number of submissions from graduate students and emerging scholars thanks to the establishment in 2019 of the Ricciardi Prize for authors under 40. This expansive array of submissions has resulted in the publication of articles that present new discoveries, define an artist’s oeuvre, and offer fresh interpretations of iconic as well as lesser-known drawings. The Editor will continue to expand this range through strategic initiatives, ensuring the journal fosters and engages with new scholarship in the field.

Responsibilities of the Position

The Editor serves as an ambassador for the journal, forming relationships with scholars, donors, collectors, dealers, advertisers, enthusiasts, and students. The Editor is responsible for maintaining the scholarly integrity and high academic standards of the journal, and ensuring the content aligns with the mission.

This position works closely with the seven-person Editorial Board (comprised of museum curators who specialize in works on paper) and reports to the President of the Board of Directors of the Master Drawings Association. The journal has two paid administrative staff positions reporting to the Editor : a Marketing & Advancement Manager, and a Business Manager and Administrator. [The journal also engages copy editors as independent contractors to assist in managing the workflow.

The Editor will manage and oversee all aspects of the publication, coordinating with the Editorial Board, the administrative staff, freelance editors, and the printer. The Editor will also work closely with the President of the Board of Directors to articulate and implement a vision for the journal, ensuring its viability for the foreseeable future, and with the Marketing & Advancement Manager to promote fund-raising initiatives.

The Editor coordinates proposed editorial changes from authors, Editorial Board members, and proofreaders and is ultimately responsible for the presentation of research in the journal, including the quality and accuracy of content.

The journal’s office is in the Department of Drawings and Prints at the Morgan Library & Museum, New York, but residency in New York is not required. In-person attendance at two board meetings a year, in April and November, is essential. The Editor is expected to present a comprehensive editorial report at each board meeting. The Editor must also attend the journal’s annual fundraising gala and symposium, which occurs in conjunction with the New York auctions of works on paper (late January-early February).

Other travel to periodic gatherings of the drawings community is expected. This could include Paris in March or April for the Salon du Dessin, and to London in early July for Classic Art Week. The Editor leads regularly scheduled virtual meetings with the office staff and Editorial Board throughout the year.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will be a scholar of significant standing in the field of Western d rawings and works on paper, with a robust history of published scholarship, editorial work, and public speaking.

The ideal candidate will have a broad range of knowledge of drawings in particular, from the Renaissance to the present, as well as a deep understanding of the editorial process. Working to deadline is critical, and the candidate should be able to demonstrate significant experience of working under such constraints. The candidate should be committed to working collaboratively with the Editorial Board and the staff and fostering a positive and productive work environment.

Candidates should have an expert knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), and Google Programs (Drive, Docs, Sheets, Calendar, Meet). A familiarity with InDesign would be helpful. The candidate should be experienced with virtual meeting tools such as Zoom.

Compensation

Annual salary $35,000-45,000; part-time, hours variable, estimated 7-14 hours per week. Up to $10,000 per year, depending on location, for travel expenses (including air or train fare, lodging, and meals, roughly 25 travel days per year for candidates outside the New York tri-state area); up to $2,000 for miscellaneous expenses (including phone charges, computer, and office supplies)
